I let out a groan as Gio, my mother's Meowth, cried out at me to wake me up.
"Mraaow!" The cat Pokemon shrieked when I still hadn't gotten up.
When Gio stuck his claws out, ready to scratch me, I finally got up. "Alright, alright," I said, stretching my arms out and yawning loudly. Gio sat down, swiping a paw over his ear as I sat up and grabbed a nearby hairbrush. "Did Mom tell you to come get me or something?"
Gio walked away as I asked the question. Such a rude Meowth, he was. Then again, that was probably common among all Meowth. As I brushed my hair, I began to think about what I had heard about Alola. They said that Meowth in Alola were unlike Kantonian Meowth, both in personality and appearance.
Speaking of, I had completely forgotten: today would be the day I would begin my Pokemon journey! I dropped the brush I was holding and ran past the coatrack holding my hat and bag as if I didn't even know they were there.
"Am I late?" I asked, running into the living room of my new house.
My mother shook her head slowly, smiling. "You still have plenty of time," she told me, lifting Gio off the ground. "Are you ready to meet some Alolan Pokemon?"
I nodded. "Of course I am!"
"Me too," she said. "Once I put these boxes away, I'll go do some sightseeing to see what kinds of Pokemon I can find. I'm sure they are all friendly."
Just as I was about to go out the door to begin my journey, my mother spoke again.
"Hold on, now," she said, "I think you're missing something." She pointed back at the door leading to my bedroom. "Make sure you get your hat and bag, you don't want to run out of room to hold things."
Before she even got to finish her sentence, I had already ran back to my room, put on my flowery hat and bag, and run back into the living room and out the door. "Bye, mom!" I shouted as I ran outside.
"Bye, Elaine!" My mother replied, waving goodbye to me. "Stay safe!"
I ran down the stairs and up the hill nearby, where I was meant to go get my starter Pokemon. As the wind ran its cool fingers through my hair, I had nearly stepped on a Yungoos. Quite an angry one at that. Probably even angrier now that I had nearly ran straight onto it.
It snarled at me menacingly, stalking forward. Just as I began to step back, three Pokemon ran out in front of me: A Deino, a female Nidoran, and an Oddish. It was easy for me to recognize the Nidoran and Oddish, as they were fairly common back in Kanto.
The three young Pokemon growled out at the Yungoos.
The Yungoos looked at the three Pokemon, and, seemingly realizing that it was outnumbered, ran off.
Letting out a short breath, I looked back down at the three, smiling faintly. "Thanks, guys," I said. They all seemed to be rather proud of themselves, puffing their chests out bravely.
