Ding-dong~
"Was that the doorbell?" My mom asked, turning away from the amber skies just behind her. Mom was about to speak again, until Gio hopped onto one of the boxes, clearly trying to tell her that she needed to unpack the boxes.
"I'll get it," I said, laughing softly.
I had only gotten a few steps into the living room, when Kukui walked into my house. Without being invited it. A little invasive, but okay. "Hey there, Elaine!" He began. "It's about time we set out for the festival, yeah! But first, there's something I need to teach you, something every Pokemon trainer needs to know."
It was pretty easy for me to realize that he was going to teach me how to catch a Pokemon. Good, I had wanted to do that ever since I got to Alola. "Okay!"
"Have fun at the festival, sweetie!" Mom said from the back porch, hopefully unpacking the boxes by now.
As soon as I stepped outside, Kukui shouted, "Hurry up, cousin! Pretend you're a Pokemon and use your Agility!"
I ran down the steps as Tenebris struggled to catch up with me. Heading to the right, I followed after Professor Kukui.
"Right over here," he said, waving me over to the tall grass. "Remember when wild Pokemon would jump out at you while you walked through the grass? Since you have that Deino there, you can not only fight them, but also catch 'em. Woo!" Kukui pulled out a Pokeball and scanned the grass for a short moment. A Grubbin walked in front of him, so he sent out a Rockruff. "Use Tackle!" He commanded, causing the rock-Pokemon to ram into the Grubbin. Despite being badly wounded, the Grubbin pinched the Rockruff with its pincers. "You have to weaken a Pokemon before you catch it, yeah," Kukui said. Just as he finished up his sentence, he threw a Pokeball at the Grubbin. It shook a few times, then clicked. He must have caught it.
"Got it," he said, turning back over to me. "Wild Pokemon usually attack people if they get to close, but if you catch them, they'll join your team and be a great help to you, yeah!" He handed me some Pokeballs and Potions, then walked away.
I smiled down at Tenebris, who stared straight into the grass. As I stepped into the grass, what looked like an oversized puppet hovered in front of me. I quickly recognized it as a Banette, shuddering. Though, I wasn't exactly sure what to use against her. Tackle wouldn't do anything and Dragon Rage would just kill her. Possibly out of panic, I threw a Pokeball. One...Two...Three...Gotcha!
I sent the Banette out of her Pokeball, silently staring at her for a few minutes while trying to think of a name. "What, you just gonna stand there and stare at me?"
"Hold on, I'm thinking," I said, before realizing that a Pokemon just spoke to me. I couldn't help but widen my eyes at this. "Wait, did you just talk?"
"Yeah," she said, rolling her eyes. "All Pokemon can, most just choose not to."
"But Tenebris wasn't talking," I muttered, mostly to myself.
Tenebris kicked the ground gingerly. "I haven't needed to..." Tenebris sighed.
I couldn't believe my ears. Was I awake right now? Because it sure as hell doesn't feel like it. Pokemon talking... I thought that was reserved for psychic types, not dark and ghost types. "I don't know what to think of this," I said.
"Does this really matter?" Banette said, narrowing her eyes at me. "Are you thinking of a name? Hurry up."
"Okay, okay," I said, glaring down at her. "How about, uh...Odium."
