Atop the wooden board I had my first real battle on, I stood facing kahuna Hala. Maybe this, instead, could be considered my first real battle. Or maybe I still haven't yet had a real battle. I had no time to ponder any of this, as I already had to get my Pokemon ready for the fight.

"I have been expecting you!" Hala said. "Shall we begin? The final trial here on Melemele Island will be against me, the kahuna! It is known as the grand trial! You have been entrusted with the Sparkling Stone by Tapu Koko! Now show me the true power of you and your team! Let the grand trial begin!"

I took a deep breath as I sent Tenebris out onto the field as Hala sent out a Claydol. Tenebris turned her head to look at me, kind of, and nodded, as some sort of reassurance.

The Claydol was told to use Heal Block, as I told Tenebris to use Dragon Rage. Unlike usual, however, the Claydol remained standing after being hit. Perhaps the Pokemon we were fighting would were getting stronger.

"Rapid Spin," Hala commanded, as the Claydol spun towards Tenebris like a spinning top, and hit her with its arms.

"Use Bite!" I shouted. Tenebris leapt towards the Claydol and bit into its shoulder, which finally caused it to go down.

Next up, Hala sent out a Drapion. It stared Tenebris down menacingly, but she didn't even flinch at the sight of it. The Drapion was told to use Acupressure, and made it appear to move faster.

I, once again, told Tenebris to use Dragon Rage. It appeared to hit the Drapion about as hard as it hit the Claydol.

The Drapion was told to... Use Acupressure again? Tenebris glanced over at me, confused. I didn't have an answer either, other than to use Dragon Rage again, which knocked out the Drapion. But as it fainted, a purple glow surrounded Tenebris for a short moment, then faded away.

Before Hala could send out his final Pokemon, Tenebris turned back towards me. "Miss Elaine," she whispered. "I believe he has disabled one of my moves."

I nodded, returning her to her Pokeball. Replacing her on the field was Ruinare, who stood facing the Blastoise Hala sent out.

Hala ordered the Blastoise to use Tail Whip, as I told Ruinare to use Charge. Ruinare stared down the Blastoise as his black fur glowed gold with the electricity that sparked around him.

Before I could tell Ruinare to use another move, the Blastoise was surrounded with energy from its Z-Power. The energy was soon replaced by raging water as it flung itself towards Ruinare, a powerful vortex sending him flying. But Ruinare quickly stood back up, shook some of the water off of his pelt, and dashed at the Blastoise, sparks flying off him as he ran.

The Blastoise was knocked back, only barely able to stay standing. It was told to use Water Gun, and beams of water were sent from the cannons on the Blastoise's back that hit Ruinare dead-on. And though he appeared to be weaker, Ruinare still hadn't gone down, and ran at the Blastoise with one last Spark, knocking the Blastoise out and winning us the battle.

Ruinare let out a cheer as I began to dry his fur off with a towel I had.

"Whoa, well played!" Hala said, returning the Blastoise to its ball and stepping towards me. He handed me a copper-colored Z-Crystal, one for Fighting Type Pokemon.

Strange, I thought. If he gives out Fightinium Z, shouldn't he have used it, rather than Waterium Z?

Hala quickly showed me how to use the Z-Crystal, then started to speak again. "Now then, Elaine... You have cleared all of the trials of Melemele island, the first of Alola's islands! The moon in the daytime, the sun at night... Now to see if you can pour your heart into something that cannot be seen but is very much real. As you continue on your island challenge, consider what makes up the people and Pokemon that you meet: both what you can see and what you cannot. You will surely meet Tapu Koko again some day."

I nodded, smiling as I pet the top of Ruinare's head.

...

After beating Melemele's Grand Trial, I was given the Ride Pager, which allowed me to ride atop Tauros, but I was currently making my way towards Big Wave beach to surf over to the next island. My team, as well, walked alongside me.

"What do you think we'll see on the next island?" Ruinare asked, looking around at the others.

I didn't answer, instead, allowed my team to talk amongst themselves.

"Prob'ly more'o the same," Odium muttered. "S'more trials, 'r those big Pokemon, 'r whatever..."

Somnium scoffed. "They're big, so what? Just because you're big, doesn't mean you're suddenly a lot stronger."

Perhaps she was saying that to relax Silva, who recoiled when Odium mentioned the Totem Pokemon. "But aren't they that big because they've been trained up to be so strong? I mean, the only reason we beat that first one was because of Dragon Rage. Do you think something bad would've happened if Tenebris didn't know that move?"

"Possibly," Ferrum said. "However, we do not know. All we do know is that we managed to win against it unscathed. We haven't faced enough Totem Pokemon to really know whether or not they're a threat."

"I have heard that the next island will have more trials than this one," Tenebris said.

"Where'd you hear that?" I asked. "We've basically constantly been together, and I don't think anyone has said that."

Tenebris shook her head. "Perhaps I imagined it... But it would make sense, would it not?"

No one responded as the seven of us arrived at Big Wave Beach. Time to learn how to surf, then.
