"Whoa..!" I took a step back as Hau appeared from seemingly nowhere. "Uh, hey, Hau. I take it you beat Ilima's trial?"
"You bet!" Hau said. "Oh, Lillie's here, too!"
"What are you up to, Hau?" Lillie asked.
"Since we both beat the first trial, I wanted to see if we really learned anything from it. Let's battle, Elaine!"
I smirked, pulling out Tenebris's Pokeball. "Sure thing." As I threw Tenebris out onto the field, a Doduo ran out in front of Hau. "Dragon Rage!" I shouted.
At the same time, Hau said, "Use Fury Attack!"
But the Doduo was faster than Tenebris, and pecked at her aggressively with their sharp beaks. They were only able to get about three hits in before Tenebris shot the vibrant blue beam from her mouth, making quick work of the poor bird.
"Y'know, you've really gotta stop using that," Hau said, sending out a Diggersby.
"Hey, if it works, it works," I said, bringing Tenebris back into her Pokeball, only to send out Silva in her place. "Now, Razor Leaf!"
"Tackle!"
Before Silva could even begin to charge up an attack, the Diggersby charged into him head-on. As soon as he regained his balance, Silva ran up, shooting sharp leaves towards his opponent. But the Diggersby wouldn't go down that easily, now would it? That would make the battle rather boring.
"Diggersby, use Leer!"
"Absorb!"
Though Silva was stopped in his tracks for a moment by the piercing gaze of the Diggersby, he didn't let that stop him completely, and shot a green beam at it.
Before it could fall to the ground, the Diggersby was brought back into its Pokeball, and I returned Silva to his Pokeball. Lastly, Hau sent out a Mienshao. Seems like Odium's time to shine. Hau shouted out a command that I didn't quite catch, but his Mienshao appeared to glow a bright blue for a second or two.
"Use Screech," I said.
Odium shrieked loudly, however, the Mienshao seemed relatively unaffected. I wasn't, though; my ears hurt.
The Mienshao once again glowed a bright blue, but still, Odium hasn't been hit. "Now, use Will-o-Wisp!" I said. Purple orbs of fire formed around Odium, then flew at the opposing Pokemon and burned it. "Shadow Sneak!"
As I shouted out the next move, a shadow appeared behind the Mienshao and clawed at it, knocking it out.
"Aw, man. I wanted to show off my Pokemon's best side more," Hau said as I returned Odium to her Pokeball. "So, you and me both beat the Totem Pokemon, right? It looks like we're getting pretty strong!"
"Sure are," I said. "Think you're strong enough to beat Hala though?"
"'Course I am!"
It looked as if Hau was going to say something else, but he stopped as Kukui walked over. "Hey there, Elaine! Knew I could count on you, yeah!"
Ah, right... He had asked me to look for Lillie, hadn't he? "Yeah, no problem," I said.
"What's this then? Hau, you finished your first too?" Kukui asked, turning away from me and over to Hau. "I bet you used some stylin' moves, yeah?"
"Heh, yep, thanks to my team," Hau said, crossing his arms behind his head.
"Hala's probably rubbing his hands together in glee right about now, oh yeah!" Kukui put his hands on his hips as he spoke.
Suddenly, Lillie spoke up again. "What do you mean?" Though, she shied back at the sudden attention on her.
"Didn't we need to battle the island's kahuna after we cleared all of an island's trials?" I asked.
"Yeah, that's right," Hau said.
"It's called the Grand Trial." Our attention was turned back over to Kukui as he spoke again. "For someone like me who's researching Pokemon moves, there's nothing better than the chance to see some more fierce Pokemon battles! Woo!"
"Well, I don't know about fierce..." Hau said, tipping his head to the side.
"I'll be the judge of that! Come on! Back to Iki Town!" Kukui said, running off before anyone could say anything else. But Lillie and Hau both followed him, leaving me alone with my Pokemon.
Fierce battles... None of the battles I had taken part in thus far have been too fierce. Then again, it's been pretty low-risk in general. Perhaps when I battle Hala, there will be more of a challenge. Besides, I know a decent amount of my team would enjoy having a challenge for a change.
A hand pulled mine forward roughly. The hand belonged to Odium, and she glared back at the rest of us. "'R we gonna go 'r not? Ya keep idlin' there 'n it's startin' t' piss me off," she said.
"Sorry," I muttered.
Before I could send my Pokemon back into their Pokeballs, Silva spoke up again. "Hold on... I think I might be evolving," he said. He glowed a brilliant blue as he changed forms. A few seconds later, the light faded as he took his new form.
"Aw, nice," I said, petting the top of Silva's head. If there was ever a time to get stronger, it would certainly be before a big battle. I returned my Pokemon to their Pokeballs and made the trek back to Iki Town.
Some time later, I ended up at my destination, and was greeted by Kukui and Lillie.
"I'm lookin' forward to seeing what moves you and your Pokemon will pour your soul into, now that you've gone and cleared your first trial, Elaine!" Kukui said.
Lillie nodded in response to him. "It's true... I'm not a trainer, so I'm sure I don't really understand how hard it must have been... But even I think it's a great achievement." Nebby poked his head out of her bag and chirped loudly.
"Thanks guys," I said, smiling. "I've never fought a gym leader before, let alone a kahuna, so I don't really know what to expect here."
"The Melemele kahuna is strong, cousin!" Kukui replied. "He's a trainer who can use Fighting-Type Pokemon to the fullest, yeah."
I hummed. I didn't really have any Pokemon strong against Fighting-Types at the moment, so hopefully Dragon Rage would be effective still, though Tenebris is a Dark-Type.
Speaking of the Melemele kahuna, Hala stood ahead of me, his back turned.
Now was our time.
