Tenebris, Odium, and I were quickly met with the sounds of people talking and laughing, the festival lights shining bright. No matter how I felt beforehand, this entire scene immediately made me a lot more excited than I had been before.

But my attention was soon stolen by Kahuna Hala walking towards me. "The Alola region is made up of four islands," he said. "And each island has its own guardian Pokemon. Our festival today is held to express our thanks to these great Pokemon guardian deities for always remaining by our sides."

"They sound wonderful," I said, staring at him in awe. "The guardian deities...Tapu Koko was one of them, right?"

"That's right," Hala said.

Tapu Koko must really live up to its name of 'guardian deity.' Since it saved me, it must be a kind Pokemon, right? Just as I finished my train of thought, a familiar figure stood not too far ahead of me. "Hey, Hau!" I said, running up to him.

"Ho! Howzit, Elaine?" Hau said. "Man, I thought you'd never make it! Me and Vullaby've been waiting for ages!"

I laughed quietly to myself. "Sorry, I just got caught up in a few battles." Not to mention those strange people I ran into only a few minutes ago. "But what's up? What were you waiting for?"

"Hold on," he said, his eyes widening. "Didn't anyone explain to you about tonight?!"

"Huh?" I asked, just as Professor Kukui and Lillie came up behind me.

"Oh yeah, right on time!" Kukui said.

"But to what, exactly?" Lillie replied, mirroring my thoughts. Nebby said something in Lillie's bag, though I couldn't understand what.

"A full-powered festival for Pokemon battling!" Kukui said. "We battle in the name of Tapu Koko, pitting our best moves against one another in friendly competition to please our guardian. Woo!"

A battle? I suppose it was a good thing I trained up Tenebris and Odium already.

"So, will you two be taking part in the battle?" Lillie asked, turning back to Hau and I. "I don't like seeing Pokemon fight one another, since they so often end up getting hurt, but I'll be sure to watch you both."

"Your Pokemon have fought for you, so show them the same care in return, Elaine," Hala said as he walked up to me with a few healing items in his hands. "Allow me to heal them for you this time."

"And with that," I said. "Shall the battles begin?"

...

A burning passion burned within me as I faced Hau. Taking a breath, I threw Tenebris's Pokeball. She roared as she appeared in front of me.

Hau threw a Pokeball too, but he sent out a Pokemon I didn't recognize. It was a red and white dragon, it looked similar to a jet.

The identity of this Pokemon was not of upmost importance at the moment. "Use Dragon Rage," I commanded, watching as Tenebris launched a raging blue beam hit the Pokemon dead-on. But as it did, the Pokemon glowed white, then changed forms completely. Now it appeared to be but a young Vullaby. I shook off my shock as the Vullaby fell down, fainted. "Good job, Tenebris," I said, returning her to her Pokeball.

Hau once again sent out the red and white dragon, and in return I sent out Odium. Before I could even give out any command, Hau shouted, "Latias, used Psywave!" The Latias opened its mouth, releasing a multicolored beam that struck Odium. Despite that, she still seemed to be in a good condition.

"Knock Off!" I yelled, causing Odium to smack the Latias down roughly. Despite looking like she hit it pretty hard, the Latias still seemed as eager to fight as Odium was.

"Go, use Psywave!"

"Knock Off!"

As the two moves intersected, I got pushed back a bit. As I regained my balance, I saw Odium, standing strong, and Latias knocked out. We...We won!

"What?" Hau said, gaping. "It's already over?!"

I smiled wide, high-fiving Odium before sending her back into her Pokeball. "Great battle, Hau!" I said.

"Yeah," he said, smiling back. "I had a blast fighting you!"

Overhead, I heard a Pokemon call out, its voice echoing loudly around us. Not in a threatening way, but it sounded as excited as I felt about that battle.

"Tapu Koko's song of approval," Hala said, staring up to the source of the voice. "Oh, I nearly forgot! I think it's time you take this, Elaine."

Hala walked to me, handing me a bracelet with a 'Z' marked on it. It was strikingly similar to the stone I found yesterday. I slipped it on.

"Your Z-Power Ring, a mysterious armband that can draw out the power that lies deep within Pokemon... It can bring forth their Z-Power!" Hala said.

"Z-Power?" I asked.

I never got an answer to my question, as Kukui said, "Well, it's time for you to get out there and start your island challenge! If you visit every island, maybe you'll figure out what that mission is."

"What?" I asked.

"Four islands! You'll travel to each of them to become the strongest trainer! The island challenge champion! Woo!"

"Sounds great, right?" Hau said. "I can't wait to have a real adventure!"

I was handed a sort of charm that looked as if it could hold a decent amount of badges in it. I never actually took part in the gym challenge back in Kanto, so all of this was new to me. Based on the sound of it, however, they were fairly different anyway. But anyways, it was time to go home now.
