A/N: I felt mildly bad about the last chapter so I decided to make a quick update XD
--------------------------------------------------------------
You didn't know what to do. A part of you wanted to scream. Another part of you wanted to cry for days on end. And another part of you wanted to go on a rampage, hitting all of the other children and your foster parents. You wanted to smash every single toy in the house.
But the shock of the realization that you were never adopted paralyzed you. Nothing could bring you to uncover your face. You kept your hands where they were, not wanting to see that you were truly in fact back at the foster home. This had to be some sort of nightmare.
"This isn't fair... this isn't fair..." you quietly whimpered over and over.
Even though you've always been surrounded by people all your life, including other children and your foster parents, you couldn't help but feel more alone now than you've ever felt.
It wasn't uncommon for foster parents to reassure you among the other kids that you were going to get adopted by a family. The difference, however, was that it reassured other children. But it didn't reassure you in any way.
You didn't want just any family. You were perfectly content with the one that adopted you yesterday.
Or the one you thought adopted you.
Either way, it just wouldn't be the same if someone else adopted you. Even if your birth parents, who you vaguely remember, wanted to adopt you, you'd refuse that in an instant even if it meant hiding away forever.
You did remember where the grim reaper dispatch was, having grown up in London all of your life. Grell definitely worked there along with her boring husband. When you snuck in before, you were easily able to find her then. There was a chance you could find her again.
Maybe you could go over there and convince her to adopt you. That gave you some hope.
You finally removed your hands from your face and rolled over to your side, facing away from the wall. But when you looked around the room again, something was... off.
The room had become more blurry. You looked at the clock, but you couldn't read the time no matter how hard you squinted. You became disoriented. Every wall, furniture, and object in the room appeared to move and spin yet all was still. Darkness began to take over too, until it all faded to nothing.
Moments later, you found yourself sitting upright again. Your whole body was shaking and coated in cold sweat. The room was almost pitch black.
Even though you've been stationary, you felt as though you just ran a mile. As you tried to catch your breath, you tried to make out the room you were in.
It took a minute for your eyes to adjust to the dark. When they did, you were able to make out the silhouettes in the room.
There was a bookshelf next to your bed. A wardrobe too. There were no other beds other than the one you were laying in.
You were in your bedroom.
Just to confirm that you were indeed in your bedroom, you crawled out of bed and flipped the switch by the door to turn on the lights.
Red walls, soft carpet, red comforters... you definitely weren't at that foster home.
You looked at your outfit, seeing that you were still wearing the clothes Grell dressed you in previously.
You breathed a sigh of relief knowing that what you had experienced was just a nightmare and nothing more.
You shut off the light and crawled back into bed. Considering how dark it was when you turned off the light, that told you that it was still night time. There was still a ways to go until morning.
You got yourself comfortable again and tried to go back to sleep.
Except that you couldn't.
For about half an hour, everytime you shut your eyes and tried to relax, anxiety would take over and memories of your nightmare just now would return.
It wasn't just the images, but the sensations you experienced as well. You couldn't recall a single time in your six years of life where you went through emotions that intense except with happiness when you found out you were getting adopted. But the feelings you were just having were not good in any way.
The dream you just had was so long... so vivid.
You feared that if you went back to sleep, you would wake up back at that foster home. And this time, it would be the reality.
At this rate, there was no way you were going to be able to fall back asleep. Judging by how tired you were, that was a sign that you weren't asleep for very long.
The only chance of you ever falling back asleep at this point was if you didn't have to sleep alone.
You decided that you were going to see if you can sleep with your mother tonight.
This was something you've never done before. This wasn't the first time you've had nightmares. Those nightmares were usually along the lines of a monster chasing you. This typically happened at nights when the other children at your foster home decided to have "Scary Story Nights".
Whenever you had those bad dreams, the most that ever happened was your foster parents reassuring you that those dreams weren't real before leaving you on your own to go back to sleep. Other than that, you handles nightmares on your own.
But now, you needed to be with someone that you trusted. In this case, it was your new mother. You needed to be near her. It would be a strong reminder that you were concretely in your new home and nowhere else. At best, you could sleep peacefully without that dream again.
You felt nervous doing this. After being with several foster parents your entire life, everyone had different reactions when it came to kids being caught awake past bedtime. So far, Grell had treated you very kindly. Not once did she get cross at you for anything you did. And at this point, you've definitely seen her when she was cross in other situations, particularly her daycare days. It wasn't pretty.
You were going to try anyway.
You left your bed once more and slowly opened the door. Silence filled the hallway before you except for the howling wind that came from outside.
You stepped out into the hallway and looked at the door that was the entrance to Grell's bedroom. You approached it.
After taking a moment to gather some courage, you slowly reached up to open the door.
