You called Wanda, hoping she had at least an idea of what was going on with your wife.
"Wands?" The other end was silent for a moment before the warm voice of your best friend filled the line, "Hello?" You exhaled with relief,
"Wanda, hi..." you almost heard her shake her head, "She missed bedtime again?"
"Yeah, is she uh, around." "Let me check." "Thank you." "No need, dekta. She's in the lab with Bruce. Want me to check when she'll be home?" "It's fine. Thanks." "Of course. Call me if you need anything else, I love you girlie." "Love you too, Wands."
You went to bed early, not bothering to wait up for Natasha as you usually did. It's just Bruce, you told yourself, there's nothing to be jealous of, she's just working late. But the little voice in the back of your head reminded you just how much she'd been working late. You were on the verge of crying when you felt the bed dip. Your heart leaped but it was too small of a dip to be Nat."Violet, honey, what are you doing out of bed?"
"I can't sleep," she clung to the unicorn Natasha had won for her at the fair last year, "I miss mama." You pulled her to your chest.
"Me too baby, me too."
----
Natasha came home around 3am and found her daughter on her side of the bed. She couldn;t help but smile sadly. She hadn't been around enough lately, she knew that, but work was important and she couldn't center her entire life around her family...could she. Natasha shook her head and lifted the sleeping girl into her arms. Vi wrapped her arms around Nat's neck instinctively. "Mama..." "Shh, peanut. Sleep now." Violet nodded and drifted back into sleep. She didn't stir again. When she came back to the bed, she was surprised to find it empty. A noise came from the kitchen and she grabbed her gun, following the noise. Of course it was just you. You stood at the sink, silently filling the tea kettle.
"Y/n? Why are you up, it's late?" You shrugged,
"C'mon malishka, what's wrong?" You bit your lip.
"What time is it?"
"What?" Nat couldn't figure out why you were asking her the time when you could clearly see the clock.
"I said, what time is it?"
"3:17am."
"Correct. It's 3:17am. What time is bedtime?"
"Y/n?"
"You promised, Nat. You promised me, you promised Vi you'd be home to put her to bed."
"I'm sorry, work ran late."
"Ten days. Work has run late every day for ten days."
"I'll be home by bedtime tomorrow, I promise." You turned to face her.
"For some reason I'm not convinced."
"Y/n-""You know what, nevermind." You shook your head, "Let's go to bed. Like you said, it's late." You started towards the bedroom you shared with your wife,
"Hold on, let's talk about this." You got into bed and began to adjust the pillow,
"We can talk about it tomorrow after bedtime." You had meant to pack venom into your words, but they came out in a slight sob. Natasha sat next to you on the bed. She reached out to comfort you but thought better of it. Instead she sat there and counted your breaths until they evened out. She clicked off the light and laid next to you in bed, her eyes on the ceiling.
"I never thought I'd settle down. I wasn't that kind of person, just ask anyone. But then you came along. I was at the bar and you asked me to dance, I said no. I don't dance, but five minutes later, there I was spinning you round and round in circles. It wasn't my style but I didn't care. I'd do anything with you anywhere. You've got me in the palm of your hand, Malishka and I'm scared. I'm terrified. If something happened to you, if something happened to Violet,I wouldn't be able to handle it. I would fall apart. I don't like feeling breakable." Natasha was surprised when your hand wrapped around hers.
"Everything breaks, love. Even rock hard ex-assassins with intimacy issues." Natasha scoffed,
"I do not have intimacy issues."
"I love you, but you do." You sat up and looked her in the eyes, you watched tears sit on the edge of falling.
"I'm scared," she said in almost a whisper, "I can't lose you. I just...I can't." You brought your hand to her face,
"Me too. Every single day I'm terrified of losing you."
"You'll never lose me."
"You'll never lose me," you repeated and kissed her softly.
"I will never ever make the choice to lose you. I'm in. I'm all in." She pulled you back into the kiss,
"Me too."
