"Keep your eyes open love, the statues in this place are awfully lifelike.."
You sighed, mentally preparing yourself for what was coming next as you passed through the portal leading to the next level. What nightmare awaits you this time?
'I wonder if they're going to come alive as soon as I step through. That would be kind of fun, I guess. Better than running from some crazy ass monkeys with knives for hands or a delusional little girl with freakishly long arms. Barely.'
The world slowly materialized around you after a few seconds. You were standing in a large outdoor area, with a set of stairs leading to a large fountain. Walking past, you saw a large statue of a man, made out entirely of gold. There was a sign underneath, reading 'Beyond These Gates, Judgement Awaits'
Past that, there was a wooden door. Hesitantly, you pushed it open, revealing yet another large open space, with four paths intersecting in the middle, right where another golden statue stood on a podium. It was saluting, donning a blue coat and a tricorne. It had a very unsettling look on its own, and the grin on its face did not make things any better.
'Jeez. Bierce was right for once.'
You hurried past it, and as soon as you did, you heard a laugh from behind you. You whirled around to see the statue, which used to face the door, now facing you.
'Oh fuck oh fuck oh FUCK.'
Backing towards the next door, you pushed against it, trying to get it open without taking your eyes off the statue.
The door didn't budge.
You stood there with your back against the wooden doors for a moment, thinking about what you would do.
'If I look away, it'll get me, I just fucking know it. But the door won't open. Is it forcing me to look away? There's no way I'm doing that. But I won't know if I don't try....'
You summoned all of your strength and willpower and forced yourself to move away from the door, turning around and pushing with all your might. You occasionally glanced back to make sure it wasn't moving anymore. Thankfully, it didn't and the doors slowly gave way, till it opened with a loud creak.
Casting one last glance at the statue behind you, you paused. It had disappeared into thin air. Before you could overthink it, the doors slammed shut, and you were alone in the hedge maze.
Or that's what you thought, before turning a corner and finding more of those fucking statues.
Shit.
Okay, there was only one more (this one was dressed in all gold, and wielding an ax. How comforting.) But that didn't mean that there weren't more throughout the maze. You just had to collect 50 soul shards and keep an eye on 'em. Simple enough.
You cautiously edged past it, walking backward for a few moments, waiting until there was some distance between you and the statue before turning and sprinting towards the nearest soul shard.
Laughter began to erupt from all around you, even though no one was in sight.
The chase had begun.
