As you made your way back through the cave system, he spoke.

"Why didn't you release her?" He asked.

"I couldn't trust her," You stated plainly and truthfully. "You were right."

He didn't respond. You were just entering the basement now. As you stepped on the wood floor, the door to the basement opened, and a large teddy bear stepped in. It had claws, large eyes, and there was a red substance smeared around its mouth; probably blood. It was wearing a pink bow and matching tutu, and it's abdomen was stitched, but there was a large tear revealing cotton that too-closely resembled intestines. It spoke. "How did it go? I hope she didn't give you any trouble."

"It went as planned, there was no trouble." He replied, nonchalantly.

You looked at him incredulously, 'It was planned? Did he want to see if I would free Bierce? But why?'

"Oh, good. And what about our little guest here, dear Malak?"

"Ugh, I've told you not to call me that. And I brought them along to teach them a lesson, to show them what could happen to them if they disobey me. You know how mortals are."

"Nobody would disobey you, dear Malak, if they knew what was good for them."

"Yes, yes. We have to get going now, I trust that you will take good care of Bierce. After all, she is my nemesis."

"Yes, Malak."

The bear moved out of the doorway and stood, watching, unblinking as you exited the room. You continued making your way through the house. You kept glancing at Malak out of the corner of your eye. Did he really plan for Bierce to try and coerce you into escaping? Why? Did he want to see if you would escape? What for? Could you have escaped? You didn't know. You briefly wondered if he could read your mind, like Bierce could when you still worked for her, but before you could ponder it for too long, he answered it for you. "Yes, I can. So be careful about what's on your mind."

You blinked. Actually, the more that you thought about it, the more it made sense. Bierce could read your mind and memories when you still worked for her, and each of the ring pieces contained one of Malak's powers. So it would make sense that he would be able to do that too. You shook your head to clear it and continued walking. "You didn't answer my other questions though. Was it actually planned? Why?"

"Yes. I planned for Bierce to try and get you to help her escape. What I didn't plan for was your response. It was very unexpected. I thought you'd help her escape."

You stayed silent. 'Could I have escaped if I accepted? Would I have been free from this mess?'

"Of course not. Had you tried, Mama Bear and her little goons would have caught you and Bierce, and you'd be stuck in a cell, same as her. And you've been meddling in my affairs too long; there's no running away from this now."

"Huh. That's fair I guess." You replied. Neither of you talked for the rest of the way. Thoughts and unanswered questions kept swimming around in your head, no matter how many times you tried to banish them. When you were teleported back to the manor, it was as dark and quiet as the forest you'd just left.

'That wasn't how I thought my first meeting would go. Huh. I guess it took more time than expected. They must be asleep right now.'

You quietly walked to your room. Closing the door, you were greeted with the familiar sight of your bed. It was just as rumpled and wrinkled as you left it. You smiled faintly, as the fatigue settled in. Crawling into it, you fell asleep, curled up in your blanket.
