NO ONE SEEMED to strongly object to the changes after the incident with Nick, and things were starting to look brighter. Brighter as in dying-glow-stick-in-the-pitch-black bright, but it beat total darkness and disorganization any day.

Most of their usual jobs had been given names, and a few Keepers had already been picked: Winston for the Slicers, Clint for the Med-Jacks, Gally for the Builders, Minho for the Runners, and Fry for the Cooks.

Despite severely disliking their assigned Keeper, Valerie and Marty had stuck with their usual job as Builders, although she couldn't rid herself of the feeling that there was more — so much more — that she could do. And maybe that was what dragged her over to Frypan, skipping Marty entirely in her lineup of stupid ideas slash advice. Or maybe it was because she missed spending time with him.

Ever since Fry had been declared a Keeper, his role in the Glade became far more than just a Cook. He attended meetings with the leaders and other Keepers — called Gatherings — and was responsible for a whole little crew of seriously less experienced Cooks. That made little time for idle chit-chat with good ol' Val.

"Frypan, I want to be a Runner," Valerie declared, barging through the kitchen doors. Five pairs of eyes that were not Fry's immediately shot towards her.

"Damn, Val, it's been weeks and now you come bargin' in with that big announcement?" Frypan emerged from around the corner, a serious look on his face. For a split second, Valerie thought he was genuinely upset at her for the distance between them. But just as quickly, he broke into a laugh and waved her over.

"Come on, come on, who set you up to this one? Was it Marty? Haven't seen him around in some time either..."

"Fry!" Valerie whisper-shouted exasperatedly. "I'm not joking!"

Frypan's laugh dissipated and he looked towards his friend. "Val, you know how dangerous that job is. And do you think Alby and Nick would approve?"
