AS SHE AWOKE, Valerie was met with the sun's bright rays glaring down at her and the sound of tired voices. She slowly stood up, using the tree behind her for support, trying not to shake the hammock attached to it, where one of the boys was still sleeping.

When first getting to the Glade, Valerie had tried sleeping in a hammock, but she had trouble getting a good night's rest when she did so. Whether it was her restless body or the result of a couple pranksters, the girl always seemed to end up on the ground, prompting a series of panicked moments where Valerie had to reassure herself that no, she wasn't back in the shaking Box, terrified for her life; she had just fallen out of her shucking hammock.

"You ready for a real, professional breakfast, Val?" A voice arose from the boy in the hammock.

"You say professional as if our food options are going to magically improve now that we've got a roof over our heads, Marty," she replies, reaching over quickly as if she was planning to shake his hammock.

"Hey, hey!" The boy shouted, although it was more of a yelp. "Last night, I was pretty sure there was a huge rock underneath my hammock, so you are not making me fall on that."

"There's literally nothing here," Valerie said with a laugh, crouching down to look under the hammock. "And besides, I wasn't gonna actually do it. I just wanted to get a rise out of you."

Marty rolled his eyes, to which Valerie smiled sweetly in return, stretching her hand out in exaggeration to help him escape this truly dangerous situation.

Together, they walked towards the newly-built Homestead. It was a rickety, one-story building that they'd worked long and hard on adding to the small structures already provided for them when they arrived in the Glade. It connected to the kitchens, but was only big enough to house one Glader — Nick, somewhat of an unofficial leader — and a meeting room.
