NORMALLY, WHEN SOMEONE extends you an olive branch — even a small, shaky one —, the natural reaction is to appreciate it and gratefully accept the person's kindness because they thought of you and did something kind for you and, maybe, were trying to right a wrong. You didn't spend hours overanalyzing two words in the conversation between the two of you.
But, that's exactly what Valerie had been doing until she'd drifted off to sleep later that night.
Granted, most people aren't trapped in a borderline prison cell with no memory of their life. However, Valerie hadn't even looked at the title or read a single page of the book Will had brought her. Instead, she'd been fixating on two measly little words: Chancellor Paige.
Will had referred to Dr. Paige as the Chancellor, rather than a doctor... and that proved three things to Valerie:
(1) Doctor slash Chancellor Paige held a position of importance in this facility, hence the title.
(2) Doctor slash Chancellor Paige had been lying to her from the start concerning things as simple as her title and role here, so it was now even more possible that she had been lying about various other things throughout their chats.
(3) She may be able to play into Will's game of making friends in order to gain more information through his accidental leaks. So, the next morning, after eating her breakfast, Valerie took another piece of paper from her desk once more and wrote out a note: another book? She placed the note on top of her food tray and slid it under the door.
Valerie tried to remind herself that she shouldn't expect anything, but she couldn't help getting anxious whenever it was 6:35 PM and her supper hadn't arrived. Did someone discover her note and find out about Will's visit? She tried to tell herself she didn't care if something happened to him, but she couldn't help but feel guilty because they were doing it for her.
