THANK THE GODS ABOVE for Valerie's internal sleeping clock, as she was able to awaken a little later than she had the morning before and remove herself from the hard-to-explain situation she would've ended up in if Minho had needed to wake her up himself. How would he have reacted if he had seen the proximity between her and the Cook? She knew it would only be a "situation" if she made it one, but she struggled to repress the thoughts surrounding her.
After eating breakfast with Minho and Newt, Valerie found herself in the Map Room readying her supplies, anxiously awaiting word from the Keeper of the Runners about her partner for the day. Minho had informed her yesterday that she wouldn't be running with him again the next day, and Valerie hoped that her companion today would be tolerable.
Just as she was sliding a few pencils into her pack — which she had grabbed from a smaller table at the side of the room —, another Runner entered the space. It wasn't Minho, though, there to assign her with a Runner; it was Newt, his hair a bit disheveled from sleep, but looking otherwise awake and ready to run.
"You're with me today," he announced, and Valerie couldn't help but feel a little relieved that it was him she was paired with, instead of someone she barely knew. Clearly, Minho did put thought into his assignments, at least when they involved a beginner.
"Awesome," Valerie replied, trying to keep her voice neutral so as not to show any sign of sarcasm. There wasn't really a way to say "awesome" in a sentence about the Maze without it sounding sarcastic, but she didn't want Newt to think she was annoyed with their pairing.
Luckily, Newt didn't pay her comment any mind. "Second day, hm?"
She nodded.
