"Sultanim, they say that the Valide Sultan is in a very bad shape," Rahime Hatun said. I handed Daphne the fabrics she was showing me and left the room immediately.
I walked down the harem where the girls all looked worried and scared. I walked up the steps that led to a balcony overlooking the harem where the doors that led to the Valide Sultan's wing were. Yenisah Sultan was standing there with Gevherhan Sultan.
"Sultanas" I bowed before the sisters. Yenisah gave me a weak smile but at least hers was the most real between the sisters.
"Is there any news?" I asked worriedly. I may have never been on good terms with the Valide but I was still sad about her sickness.
"No, none" Yenisah Sultan shook her head. We waited and waited for at least an hour before one of the doctors stepped out of the room and bowed to us.
"How is our Valide?" Gevherhan asked. I watched Yenisah's face before the doctor answered. I saw pain and sorrow in her eyes.
"The Valide has sadly passed away. May Allah gives you patience" the doctor bowed before leaving us. Yenisah sucked in a deep breath and looked at me with silent tears running down her face.
"No" she whispered before her eyes rolled to the back of her head. Gevherhan Sultan and I were barely able to catch her before she hit the ground.
I watched with some tears running down my face as they brought out the Valide's coffin. We were standing in the tower of justice during her funeral like customs demand. The only sound in the tower was Yenisah's sobbing and Gevherhan's soothing words along with the prayers from below.
"Mommy, come on, I wanna go play" Selim whispered tugging at my dress. I ran my fingers through his hair to calm him down a little. He was still too young to understand what was going on around him.
"Soon, darling" I promised and kissed his forehead. I turned back around and watched as Mahmoud was one of the people bearing the coffin on their shoulders and the look on his face broke my heart.
Rahime pulled Selim back so he wouldn't disturb the sorrow in the room anymore. Gevherhan pulled Yenisah Sultan out of the room whispering things trying to calm her down.
"I can't believe she's gone" Hatice whispered stepping closer to the windows.
"Neither can I, she was a strong Sultana. She never for once showed her sickness or any pain" I placed my hand on the bars on the window that prevented anyone from seeing us.
"That Maybe the only thing we both agree on other than our love for Mahmoud," Hatice said turning to face. This was the first time I saw the sincerity in her eyes as she spoke.
"Right" I nodded my head and turned to leave the tower with my children behind me. The walk to the harem was not as long as I wanted it to be, I couldn't think through Hatice's words much. This was the first time she admitted to loving Mahmoud and at first, I wouldn't have believed her but her eyes showed at her words true. I don't know what to make of her confession.
