Anvi

Ronit was too silent the entire trip. I know I keep offending him and that I am not the kind of wife he wants but one thing I know for sure about him. He is stubborn and he is not going to let me go. But if I stay, I will be only putting him in danger. How can I do that to him? How can I put him in danger? He is not going to understand.

I walked after him to the house almost six months had passed since I have been here. And I am the least excited among the three of us to return back. Because here I think other than Ronit and Neev no one wants to see me. My mother-in-law is one of those people who makes me think about how I will be adjusting here. Since Ronit loves his mother, his stepmother, I cannot hurt him.

"Ronit, Neev, you came." I heard her voice say. She didn't mention me. I didn't expect her to. And she met my expectation. "Ma, Anvi is here as well." She pulled back from Neev. "I can see, bring the things." The maid brought a brass plate with Diya and Kumkum. She did the rituals not so happy then let us enter inside. Ronit held my hand and led me towards his room. The room I wasn't allowed into.

I stopped at the threshold looking at the place. "Come on inside Pari, why are you standing there?" "Am I allowed in? last time I was here you had..." He pulled me inside and locked the door. "Last time I was a different man, with a different path and different plans. But today I am changed, this heart loves you. And this all belongs to you only." He whispered. "Now, I think you are tired we had a long flight." Yes, long and silent flight. "Get some rest." But I am restless.

"Mother wishes for you and us to go shopping, it is Diwali. I want you to celebrate. We will bring back lots of fireworks. You will like that don't you?" He asked pushing my hair back and putting it behind my ear. "I..." I don't know what to say. "Say yes to this, let me show you how much I can love you. Let me show you Anvi, how much I can love you. For once, be my wife. Let me be your husband. For once let me take care of you. And for once don't say a word about leaving." He told me.

He got down on his knees. "Ronit what are you..." "Shhh... don't say anything. Please, I don't know why you do not believe me. I don't know why you think that I am lying to you, but I am not and I wished to make you understand. I wish to make you understand that I..." someone knocked at the door. "Ronit someone is at the door," I told him. "Ronit, are you in there. Someone is here" I said trying to make him get up. "Probably it is mother." He said getting up and then he opened the door casually.

Someone came inside and hugged him. He was taken aback and even I was taken aback. "Ronit," the girl said not looking at me. "It had been ten years since we have met. I tried to contact you, even I told Tanvi about it but you didn't return back my calls." So she knows Tanvi, why am I not surprised? Ronit pulled her hands back from his body just as his mother entered. "Riya when did you get back from the states?" He asked. "She wanted to see her best friend who was too busy in Canada to pick up her phone. So, I called her and told her that you will be returning home this weekend." Alright none of them are now acknowledging me.

"Oh, I see mother. Very well then, since Anvi is very tired why don't you take her to shop, I will go with Anvi later today" Ronit told her. "I thought we will go together like always. For old times sake?" He didn't touch her but gave her a very reserved smile. One I thought he only does with me. Am I feeling this jealousy? Or it is a genuine bad feeling within because he told me that I was the center of his universe? I don't know what this is but somewhere it hurts.

"I am sorry, but I cannot. You see I have a wife to take care of. And I cannot leave her here alone. I promised her a personalized tour of the city. Since I grew up here, it was the only way I can put a smile on her face. You know I have always been attentive towards my things and she well most important thing in my life." I do not wish to disturb your reunion with your friend. "You can go Ronit," I told him softly.
