Abby and Lev eventually found land and promptly joined the Fireflies.
As tempting as it had been to just fend for themselves, they soon realized that they needed some kind of civilization to acclimate to. After all, they had both grown up in closed communities. To have that again would be nice.
It took some narrow escapes from packs of infected and at one point they even got split up for about a week, but they did it.
Once they adapted to the society of the Fireflies- whose kindness had far exceeded their expectations- they were allowed to to leave base for decent amounts of time, having free roam over the land just with the requirement that they get tested for infection before they were allowed back in.
Lev was turning 16 soon, and Abby wanted him to give him a cool experience for his birthday. So, she spoke with some people and scheduled free roaming time for as long as they wanted on his birthday.
She had seen an old amusement park on patrol at one point, and while she had no hopes in reviving it, it could still be fun.
So, the day came.
Lev followed her through the woods, just under the assumption that they were doing patrol, when suddenly they came to a stop.
His eyes lit up as he saw it. A massive ferris wheel sat stationary in the center, making it abundantly clear that this had once been an amusement park. "Happy 16th, Lev" Abby said with a small smile as the younger boy looked around.
There were old cases of treats (snickerdoodle, brownies, etc.), plenty of shut down rides, and a wide variety of prize stations. Some were basic, with dinosaur plushes and blow up toys. Others were more expensive looking, with different disks and gadgets.
"This is amazing" Lev said with a grateful smile. "Thank you so much!"
"Of course" Abby replied. "Wanna steal some shit?"
"Always"
