YN cooed as the kitten started to meow, stretching out her tiny body as she awoke.
"Good morning, Belle." She chuckled, scratching the purring cat's head. "You're all fixed up now." The woman hummed as she picked the kitten up and placed it in its bed, locking the cage shut and smiling as the kitten drifted back off into post-anesthetic slumber.
YN continued around the practice, setting aside tools that had been sanitized and discarding used bandages. She was swaying her hips at the basin when a loud bang startled her. The young vet's eyes flicking to the door that was rattling.
YN bit her lip, looking at the time. It was nearly ten at night and the weather was absolutely atrocious outside. She relaxed slightly when nothing else sounded and she palmed it off as being the wind.
Not even a minute later YN jumped in shock as a large man stood in the foyer, his long hair sticking to his forehead. "Uh, we're closed." YN squeaked, stumbling back a step.
"Please... Help." The man groaned, falling to his knees.
"Oh, my- You need an ambulance, you need a hospital-" The man growled, making YN tremble.
"No hospital. Just need stitching up." YN swallowed, scratching her neck.
"I- I'm a vet. I don't-" The trembling man's head shot up, his piercing blue eyes connecting with YN's.
"You stitch up animals, no?" YN nodded slowly, trying to appear nonchalant. "Then stitch me up. Not a big deal."
YN clenched and unclenched her fists as the man sat on the metal bench, his bloodied shirt discarded on the ground. "I'm really not qualified-" The man sent her a look of warning, making the woman shut her mouth quickly with a nod. "Can I at least get your name?"
The man winced as YN spray his wounded shoulder with antiseptic. "Bucky." He muttered, clenching his teeth.
"Okay, Bucky. My name is Dr. YN YLN." Bucky nodded, looking to the ground as YN's eyes drifted to his metal appendage.
"Happened in the war." Bucky murmured, lifting his eyes to meet YN's bright, young and innocent eyes.
"Which war did you serve in?" YN asked, smiling softly. "My grandfather served in World War Two." Bucky grimaced looking to his feet.
"As did I." Bucky whispered, avoiding YN's eyes.
"I'm sorry?" YN asked, wiping away some blood as she finished stitching up Bucky's flesh shoulder.
"I said as did mine." YN nodded, smiling at him. "Iraq." Bucky said, trying to smile as the woman frowned at her work. He took in her furrowed brows and concentrated eyes. Her tongue was poking out of the side of her mouth, and before long Bucky's forced smile turned genuine.
"Did you need some water, maybe something to eat?" YN offered, finishing up and turning toward the basin. Bucky cocked his head at the offer, he could have sworn not even an hour ago this woman was absolutely terrified of him.
"I could use some food and water, sure." Bucky said, clearing his throat awkwardly. YN nodded, turning and smiling at Bucky, making the older man's jaw unclench.
"Stay right there, I'll get something organized." Bucky nodded, watched her leave the room. YN hummed under her breath as she grabbed a few bottles of water, stuffing them into a small rucksack and following them with the rest of her snacks from the cupboard.
She leaned back, looking into the exam room and saw Bucky smiling at his hands. YN sighed as she stared at her umbrella, weighing up her options. Huffing, she grabbed the umbrella and her thick blanket and stuffed them into the bag also.
