~Katya's POV~
I stretched my legs out as I sat down at a table in my last class of the day, which was astronomy. This table was so small that there were only three seats per table.
As I sat at the table, I glanced up when someone suddenly sat down beside me, and blinked in surprise when I recognized her as the girl that I had seen in English this morning. She smiled as she looked at me, brushing a strand of her long, dark black hair behind her ear. "Hi." She chirped. "Hope you don't mind me sitting here. I don't know anybody in this class, it seems, but you were sitting on your own. Figured I'd sit here with you, if that's okay." She said, to which I gave her a small smile and shook my head in response.
"I'm Saki." She introduced herself, setting that raggedy blue bag on top of the table in the space in front of her. I glanced over, my blue-grey eyes meeting her brown ones, and gave her a small smile. "Katya. Katya Volkov." I responded, causing her to cock her head to the side curiously. "Volkov. Are you Russian?" She asked curiously. My lips twitched. "My dad is from Russia, but I was born here in America." I explained simply, fiddling with my fingers.
Saki smiled at me brightly. "It's a pretty name." She complimented me, causing my face to warm slightly, flattered at the compliment. "Thanks." I said softly, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. "I saw you in English earlier today, right?" She mentioned, catching me a little bit off guard. Honestly, I didn't think that she'd noticed me, but I guess I'd been wrong. "Oh, um, ye-yeah. That was me." I affirmed with a nod of my head. Biting on my lip, I studied Saki's slim face and then spoke, eyeing her curiously. "That was your brother, right? The one with the blue hair?" I presumed aloud. She nodded, dark brown eyes peering at me through the fluttery false lashes she had on. Her makeup looked flawless, I couldn't help but to notice, even down to her highlighter and the eyeliner she wore.
"How'd you know?" She wondered. I gave a small shrug and pointed from her nose to her lips. "You have a lot of facial similarities, so I just kind of assumed." I told her, earning an offended look from her. "Are you saying I look like a guy?" She asked incredulously.
My eyes widened and I quickly shook my head. "N-No!" I exclaimed, surprised when she laughed at the panicked state I went into. "Don't worry, Don't worry." Saki giggled, waving a thin hand at me. "I'm just joking." She assured me with a playful grin that made me sigh deeply in relief.
Still smiling, she gently nudged me with her elbow and spoke to me in a warm tone. "I think you and I will become great friends, Kat."
**
Surprisingly enough, Saki and I did end up becoming closer friends over the next week, though we mostly spoke to one another during Astronomy due to the fact that her and her other friends often chatted a lot during English. She had introduced me to her brother, Ichiro, but I hadn't spoken or been introduced to the other two men she hung around with during English, which I was fine with. I sat at a more empty table now, anyways, with only one other girl who didn't seem to speak to anyone.
On Friday, I entered Astronomy class at the end of the day, glad to have gotten through this past week. I sat down in my usual seat beside Saki, looping my backpack around the back of my chair as I did so.
"Hi, Kat." She chirped, and I gave her a friendly smile, pulling out my notebook from my bag. "Hey." I greeted in response, flicking a strand of my fiery hair out of my eyes. I opened up my notebook and fiddled with my pencil in one hand, flipping to an empty page. As I did, I could feel Saki's dark brown eyes boring into the side of my head, her thin leg bouncing up and down repeatedly. Slightly amused, I looked over at her and lifted up a singular arched brow of mine. "Everything okay? You seem a little...excited." I said with a soft laugh, noticing the sparkle of excitement in her gaze.
Saki giggled, fiddling with her dark hair. "So, I was thinking...." She began, the tone of her voice making me a little apprehensive. "There's a party tonight, and I know you're new to town. I thought, you know, maybe this party would be nice for you. You could meet some of my friends, too." She suggested, causing me to bite on my bottom lip in thought.
I'd been to a few parties when I was in high-school, but that was when I was fifteen and I hadn't been to a party since then. Now, I was twenty years old, and I'd imagine that parties in high school are likely far different from college ones. The parties in high-school were all boring, so I just stopped going to them.
A thoughtful hum left my lips as I crossed my legs over one another, glancing up at the ceiling as I contemplated her question. I still didn't really have any other friends and I had nothing to do tonight, so I figured going to this party with Saki couldn't really hurt, could it? Worst case is I just take the bus back to my apartment if I decide that I don't like the party. No biggie.
"You're sure it's fine for me to go? I mean, I don't really know anyone here, so..." I said to her, to which she laughed and waved a hand in a shooing, dismissive manner. "Oh, don't you worry about that. So many people go that it doesn't really matter." She responded, which made me feel a little bit better. I let out a sigh of relief and smiled at her, nodding my head. "Okay. Then I don't see why not." I agreed to go, laughing when she grinned in excitement and bounced in her seat slightly.
"Oh, yes! You have my phone number, so I'll text you later tonight and get your address." She told me in a ramble, my lips tugging into a smile at her excitement. "I look forward to it." I grinned.
And for the first time in a long time, I was actually excited at the idea of going to a party.
