"Doctor Lee, you are needed in room 3."
"Thank you," I said. I quickly finished up writing down the prescription and then handed it to the secretary.
I picked up the folder for room 3 and made my way there.
I faced the plain white door and knocked three times.
"Come in..." a woman's voice said.
I tried to put on my best smile and then opened the door. Inside was a mother sitting down on the chair and an impatient little boy on the children's chair. He saw me come in and then suddenly looked scared.
"Hi, my name is Lee Jieun, and I'm new here," I said smiling.
The woman nodded and grabbed the little boy's hand. "My son is coughing a lot and also can't sleep at night. I'm worried something is wrong."
I nodded slowly. I looked at the boy who was now hiding behind his mother's leg.
"What's your name?" I asked, kneeling down.
He didn't answer me.
"My name is Jieun, what's your name?" I asked again.
"Jaewoon..." he whispered.
"Hi Jaewoon, can Noona see your throat to see if there's something wrong? I'll give you a little gift at the end," I said, giving him a smile.
"What kind of gift?" he asked, looking at me.
"It's a surprise," I said. I took out a stick and told him to open his mouth. I shined a light through it and looked. It was infected, and that was why he was coughing. "Did you eat any medicine?"
"Herbs. I gave him herbs," the mother replied.
"Here," I said smiling. I held out a lollypop and he smiled, taking it. I quickly wrote down a prescription for cough syrup and handed it to the mother. "Give this to him at night only, once a day. He should be better in a few days."
"Thank you doctor," the mother said, and then took her son out.
I filled in the information and then filed it in my office. I walked down the hall into the locker room. I was done for today.
"Jieun...going home?" Hyojin asked, changing.
"I'm done Unnie. You are too, aren't you?" I asked, looking at her.
We were both doctors here for the Children's Hospital in Seoul. I just graduated from StanfordUniversity and worked part time. The other time, I have to return to school in SeoulUniversity. Hyojin was a few years older than me and finished all her schooling.
"Yes, I'll see you tomorrow okay?" Hyojin asked.
I nodded and she left. I quickly changed and walked out to the front when a white car pulled up in front of me. I smiled and opened the door and got in.
"You're late Unnie."
"Sorry, had one last patient," I said, putting on my seatbelt.
I turned my head to see Arin in sunglasses. She pulled out from the hospital and headed for SeoulUniversity. Arin finished her undergraduate degree and was currently working on her masters in psychology.
"Was it another bratty kid?" she asked, with her eyes still on the road.
"Why do you think every kid has to be bad?" I asked, searching through my purse.
