"Sawa why you cwy?" Mal asked her big sister after letting her just hold her for almost an hour. Sara just quickly put on a fake smile as she looked at the innocent toddler.
"Mal, don't worry about that okay. Now come on let's get you some food to eat," Sara told the toddler as she tried her best to stay calm and not freak out the toddler who was probably already scared and confused.
Mal just nodded as she was hungry, but she still wasn't sure what was going on. She was pretty sure it wasn't good though because Sara seemed terrified and panicked.
"Otay I wa sawbewys," the young girl told Sara who just nodded as she picked her up and placed her in her high chair.
Just as Sara was about to grab the strawberries and cut them up she got an alert from her door making her quickly run over to check the camera.
Sara felt her whole body go numb as she saw the guards right outside her door as she knew this was really happening. "Sawa wa go on?" Mal called out causing Sara to quickly run back over as she tried her best to mask her fears.
"Nothing Mal I just thought I heard something, but there's nothing there. Okay so strawberries right," Sara told the toddler who just nodded. "Yeah I wob dem!" The young girl told Sara who just smiled a little.
"Oh I know," Sara playfully told the toddler as she tried to still act herself to not freak out the innocent baby. She then cut the strawberries up and then placed her in her crib again and called Nico.
"Have you found anything yet?" Sara asked her boyfriend as she was desperate by this point. They were going to be coming in any second and she still needed to find a way to hide Mal and still be able to check up on her grandma who wasn't doing well at all right now.
"I have a lead. I'm following it up now. How's everything?" Nico told Sara who just held back her tears.
"Not good. Lita isn't doing well at all. And I don't know what to do about Mal. I don't want to scare her but I'm so terrified right now Nico. And there's armed guards outside my door right now. I don't know what to do," Sara told Nico who just sighed.
"It's going to be okay. I'll call you when I get the passes. Just keep doing what you're doing okay," Nico told Sara who just nodded. "Okay," Sara told Nico as she ended the call then went back to the nursery to check up on Mal again.
Sara smiled in relief when she found the strawberries all gone and the toddler was passed out asleep cuddled up with her dragon toy.
Once Sara was sure that Mal would be okay she quickly changed into her pandemic stuff and then went to check up on her grandma again.
Sara felt her heart ache as she opened the door and saw her grandma so weak and sick, but she pushed that feeling away as she made her way into the room and grabbed a washcloth to help her grandma.
"Sara," Lita weakly called out, causing Sara to quickly whisper back in response letting her know that she was still there. "You look so much like your mother," Lita told Sara in Spanish, causing Sara to nod sadly.
"She was the strongest woman I ever knew. But not as strong as you. She would have been so proud of you. The way you've stepped up and taken Mal in as your own. You have been such a good mother to her. She loves you so much. I can always see it in her eyes. The way her face lights up every time she's around you. Please keep taking care of her and being the mother that she needs," Lita told Sara again in Spanish, making her start sobbing as she nodded.
"I will Lita don't worry," Sara told her grandma in Spanish causing her to weakly smile. "Also that boy loves you. You've never been in the same room before but he loves you and he loves Mal. He loves you both," Lita weakly told Sara who just lost it as she started sobbing more.
"I love you. Goodbye my Lita," Sara sobbed out to her grandma in Spanish as she knew this was it. Her grandma was gone and she couldn't do anything to stop it at this point.
Sara stayed with her grandma for a few more minutes just holding her hands and sobbing before she got up and left the room not being able to handle being there any longer as it was too hard.
Once Sara left the room she quickly changed out of her clothes and washed herself off then went to Mal's room and carefully picked up the sleeping toddler as she just sat down while holding her close.
Sara had already lost enough family today she just couldn't lose Mal too. Sara just immediately picked up her phone as soon as she saw Nico was calling.
"Hey," Nico told Sara who just tried to hold back her tears. "Hi," Sara told Nico, letting a few tears slip down. "What is it?" Nico asked in concern as he could tell something was wrong.
Sara just tried to hold back more tears, but they came down again anyway. "She's gone and I still don't know how to even tell Mal. Please tell me you have the passes," Sara whispered to Nico as she was hurting right now. And she knew she was going to have to break the news to Mal who wasn't going to understand with how young she was. And she already lost everything else she couldn't lose anymore.
Nico just sighed as he hated this. He hated hearing how much pain Sara was going through right now and he hated that he couldn't do anything to stop it. "I don't. I don't have the passes," Nico told Sara who just closed her eyes as she held back her tears.
"It's okay," Sara whispered as she had known that he probably wasn't going to find any passes and she had accepted it. "Now I know where I can find some. But when they come you have to hide. Okay you can not let them find you or Mal. You do whatever you have to do to keep you both safe. But just don't. I need you to buy me a little time," Nico told Sara as he was desperate by this point.
He knew they were running out of time, but he refused to give up. Sara and Mal needed him to save them. "Okay," Sara whispered again as she looked at the peaceful little girl who had no clue what horrors were coming their way.
"I'm sorry. I love you and tell Mal that I love her too," Nico told Sara who again held back her tears. "I love you too and Mal does too," Sara told Nico as she ended the call and then gently shook the toddler.
"Sawa! I sweepy!" The young girl cried out as she began to cry. "I know Mal, but we're going to play a game. It's called don't get caught," Sara told the toddler as she picked her up and quickly placed her in the perfect hiding spot.
"Okay now Mal you need to stay here and do not move from this spot no matter what you hear or see. Do you understand me? I'm doing this to keep you safe because I love you," Sara told the toddler as she handed her the dragon and placed Mal's pacifier in her mouth.
"Wob you an otay," Mal told Sara who just nodded as she carefully made sure that Mal's hiding spot would work then she quickly got herself ready to fight against the sanitation crew as she would not let them win especially not without a fight.
Sara lost enough from this whole thing. She would not be losing her baby and the only other person she had left at this point. Even if it meant having to fight in order to protect what's hers.
