Chapter Thirty Eight

Maya's POV

Today is the day. The day that we never thought that we wold ever see with Amelia with us earth side. We thought that every birthday of hers that we were able to celebrate were going to happen in a cemetery. But Amelia is our miracle and Carina and I will make sure that we don't take any of her birthdays for granted because we know first hand how quickly we can lose this special day. 

"Is this good" Carina asks quietly as she holds a banner in place above the mantel. "Or do I need to move it up a little"

"It's fine my love, you don't need to move it anywhere" I respond, keeping y voice down given the fact that it was 5am and we still had some gifts to wrap. 

"I can't wait till the bambina find out what we are going to do today. I am honesty a tiny bit giddy" Carina says, coming down the step ladder after affixing the sign to the wall. 

"Me neither, I can't wait for us to be able to hold Amelia in out arms knowing that she is no longer just our foster daughter, but is actually our daughter." I say, standing up and walking over to Carina. "No more meetings with Camilla. No more worrying that she could be taken away. Just you, me and our tiny brunette." I wrap my arms around her waist, placing a soft kiss on her lips.

"Don't forget her present" Carina reminds me. "Where is it because I know that it isn't in our apartment"

"Andy has it. She is going to meet us outside the courthouse and give it to Amelia then." I tell her before I go back to wrapping up the last few presents and setting out Amelia's outfit. While I'm doing this, Carina heads into the kitchen to start preparing her birthday breakfast. Oven Baked doughnuts. I didn't even know they were a thing until one day after school she came out saying that she made them with Ms Scorsone as a treat for completing all the work in the file. She even is ahead of the kids in her class and Carina and I could not be any prouder.

"Shall we go wake up the bambina?" Carina asks once it hits 6:30.

"Yeah, get a candle ready for one of the doughnuts" I remind her

"Got it" She lights the candle and we head into Amelia's room where we find her starting to wake up already. 

I turn on her light and gently rub her back until she is awake. "Morning mama's" She says quietly, her voice groggy as she has just woken up.

"Good morning princess. We have something for you" I say to her softly. Carina presents the doughnut to Amelia and hands her the plate as we begin to sing softly.

She looks up at the two of us with tears starting to form in her eyes. She quickly blows the candle out the leans forward, wrapping her tiny arms around the two of us. The room remains silent, but its a happy silence. We stay wrapped together for a couple minutes before Carina hands Amelia the plate, telling her to quickly eat the doughnut then meet us in the living room.

Amelia's POV

I finish my doughnut and take the plate into the kitchen before walking towards the living room where there is wrapping paper blocking the way in. "Can I come in mama's" I say loud, but not quite loud enough to be shouting. I hear mamma tell me I can, so I rip my way through the paper and enter the living room where I find lots of pink and purple balloons that are on the floor and some have floated up to the ceiling. There are also lots of pretty fairy lights and a big pile of presents on the floor. As I take in what momma and mamma have done for me, I start to get a little overwhelmed because I realise that other than when I came home from the hospital, I haven't really experienced something like this before.
