'winter solstice: part one: the spirit world'

𝕿HE AIR WAS SO THICK AND DENSE, Ryn could mistake the hallways for the seafloor— deep, heavy, thickened, and pressurized.

Walking down the yawning dark halls, the now sixteen-year-old Ryn paces herself with her older brother, Katio, and the Princess of the Fire Nation, Azula.

It isn't who she was walking with that brings the heavyweight to the air. The situation that tricks Ryn into thinking she's walking on a tight rope—one step out of line and she'll meet her end— is formed by the man just a couple of feet away from her.

The Fire Lord.

Ryn was absolutely terrified. Of course, The Fire Lord intimidated everyone, but Ryn wasn't just anyone. She was the daughter of The Fire Lord's advisor.

So while she's the perfect picture of calm— neatly folded hands, head held high, a pleasant consonance, even paced steps— her shoulders are tensed, her tongue is bitten, and her breathing is slowly calculated to what would make the least noise.

Unfortunately, she had skimmed over one small crease, one small mistake in her appearance that catches the attention of a certain Princess.

"Perfection is hard to come by, Ryn," Azula has a purpose behind her voice. She's leading up to something, Ryn just doesn't know what it is yet.

The royal procession stops, the guards, and the children of both Fire Lord Ozai and Ryn's mother, the Royal Advisor falling into a line beside the crimson red carpet that leads into the war room.

Only two slip in, leaving the guards and children outside until the meeting is receded.

Against Ryn's odds, the wait for this meeting to end will be too long.

She's practically entrapped with Azula. She can't leave, it'd look dishonorable for her family, and she certainly couldn't have that. So, she stays, waiting for her mother to save her from Azula's tormenting jabs.

"You look lovely today, except that collar...I must say it's rather distracting."

Great, another thing for Azula to prod at, Ryn thought to herself.

Ryn merely lets out the smallest puff of air at this, too small, it seems, as her frustration at not only herself still doesn't subside.
