death with dignity - sufjan stevensThe sun shone through the large windows of the cabin, illuminating the five faces sitting in the room. The peaceful strumming of the guitar made for a pleasant sound, and the brunette's arm around me made my heart skip a beat or two. "Anyone want a drink?" I ask, standing up and looking around at the others in the room. I mostly wanted an escape from the boy next to me, knowing my heart couldn't handle him being so close to me.
"I could go for another beer. Do we have any bud lights left?" Josh asks, and I nod, "I'll check. Bud lights all around?" "I'll help, you can't carry all those drinks." Sam says, standing up. I nod slightly, not having it in me to turn him away. He follows me to the garage where we kept all of the drinks, watching as I open the fridge. "It's so beautiful here. I'm glad we did this." He smiles, and I nod, "Me too. I've never been to Oregon before." I explained, and he furrowed his eyebrows at me. "I know. I've known you your whole life."
I laugh, "You say that as if you're like, 30 years older than me. Two months, Sam. Two." I grin, and he shakes his head, "Still older than you." He says, booping my nose. My family had lived next door to his since before I was born, so naturally, we'd been best friends growing up. We never really grew apart, despite my family moving a few blocks away. "What are you staring at?" He asks, and my face turns a light shade of pink. "Sorry, I'm just tired." I said when I realized I was staring at him.
"Is everything okay? You've been acting weird today." He says, holding the fridge open as I grab 4 drinks, which was all I could hold. "I'm fine, Sammy. Promise." I say, and he nods skeptically, grabbing the last two drinks. We headed back to the living room, handing everyone their drinks before sitting back down. Jake was still playing the guitar, which made me smile. I set his drink on the table in front of him, then handed Danny, Ronnie, and Josh theirs as well. I took my seat next to Sam, and he handed me the other one he was holding.
"Who was the first person to get drunk? I really wonder..." Josh begins, trailing off into a rant as he usually did. Sam looks at me, a small smile creeping on his face. "Where'd you get this?" He asks, playing with the necklace around my neck.
I purse my lips, "I think some trading post in... California?" I give him a look, unsure of whether that was right. "Try again." He says, that same boyish grin on his face he always had. "If you know where I got it then why did you ask?" I raise an eyebrow. "I just wanted to see if you remembered. I got it for you before we went on tour." He reminds me, and my face turns red. I had totally forgotten. "Oh, right. I was just messing with you!" I say, and he grins, "No you weren't. You forgot. It's fine."
"Sorry." I frown. "It's fine!" He laughs, "You have like a million necklaces. You can't keep track of where you got every single one." I nod slightly, finishing off my drink. I picked up my phone, my heart dropping when I saw that I had nearly a thousand instagram message requests. "Are you okay?" Jake asks, noticing my expression. "Did you put me on your story?" I ask Sam. "I mean... you were in it. I didn't tag you cause I didn't want anyone attacking you for any reason."
"Well, they found me." I mumble, looking through the death threats and bitter messages. Josh grabs my phone from my hands, locking it and handing it to Danny who puts it on a shelf where I couldn't reach it. "Hey! Give it back!" I exclaim, trying to get my hand up high enough to reach it. "I'm not 11, I can handle a couple death threats."
"You shouldn't have to. I'll delete it, I'm sorry." Sam says sadly, and I shake my head, "No, it's not your fault." I give him a reassuring smile, but he could tell there was an amount of sadness behind it. Ever since the boys had begun getting famous, some fans had always gone overboard while commenting on my posts and messaging me.
