The silver key

Goodbye

A few weeks had passed since the whole incident, and things had cooled down greatly. The key hazard remained in Nicole's possession for a while, even though Leo asked for it multiple times. Erik's mom was returning home from the hospital, she hadn't completely recovered but was much less delusional. Nicole and Leo told Minerva that they were gonna bury the key in the forest for the time being, which she was happy to hear, But sadly that was partly a lie. The key still sat in Nicole's cupboard.

"We should just go bury it like we planned" Nicole said to Erik and Leo.

"Nicoooollle! Come on! My parents had it for years before something bad happened!" Leo replied annoyed at the repetitive conversation.

"We can dig it back up later and decide what to do, maybe just give it off to the government" she said.

"Oorrrrr we could have it now and decide later"

"Isn't it more useful later?" Erik said.

"Seriously guys!? Are you kidding me?!" Leo sighed.

"We are pretty much fighting over the same thing our parents did" Erik said rolling his eyes.

"I know!" Nicole exclaimed annoyed.

"Why do you wanna put it away?! Give me one valid reason!" Leo said crossing his arms.

"Well, our parents are dead" Nicole said plainly.

Leo pressed his lips defeated, "fine, do what you want, I still got my super cool pooowerss!" He said rubbing his hands like a movie villain.

He slowly walked out of the room leaving Nicole and Erik.

"We'll go bury it then?" Nicole asked.

"Don't you wanna take Leo?"

"Nope, if he knows where it is, he'll dig it up, he knows that too"

"Fine then! I'll get the shovel, you aren't just gonna bury the key directly are you?"

"Nope!" She said searching for a small wooden box near her pillow,"it was in the storage room, the key fits inside so it should work"

"Great!" Erik said examining the box, He contemplated whether to tell her how it looked, "who gave this to you?"

"Oh, I was asking Candace if she could find an empty box for me from the storage room so she got me that"

"Nicole.."Erik said, taking her hand and letting her trace the top of the box.

She felt the engravings and tried to read it, she wasn't used to this yet. So instead she used what seemed to come to her naturally now.

A young woman with long blond hair sat with a hammer and chisel, tossing her head back she signed, this was not gonna work. Of course the engagement had just happened, but she really wanted to make something with her new initials! Something permanent, it had been going perfectly until she chipped the side of the W. It was not too obvious but she needed it perfect. She tossed the box into the corner of the room and walked out annoyed.

Nicole returned to a slightly panicked Erik embracing her. Tears were rolling down her cheeks uncontrollably. Her mom, she saw her mom. The letters R.W. were clear now that Nicole knew what it was.

"It's my mom's huh?"

"I guessed as much" Erik said not letting go.

Nicole buried her face and tired to wipe away the tears.

"Was it something bad?" Erik asked softly.

"Nope, it was something good"

"That's a relief! Should I go get another box?"

"Yes please"

A week later, Erik spent a solid two hours digging while Nicole sat helplessly, she wanted to help but knew she couldn't. The hole was quite deep and Erik had gotten a good small box from his grandad.

"...but then we realised that they were all joking! I mean what the hell?!" Nicole ranted telling Erik about an incident while she was in 8th grade.

"All done" Erik said interrupting her.

"Wait what?!"

"I just finished covering the hole!" Erik said grinning.

"But I didn't get to finish my story!"

"You can tell me later" Erik said chuckling and took Nicole's hand, " come on I'll take you back home"

"That's just an excuse to hold my hand" Nicole said accusingly, Making Erik laugh.

"Oh yeah, will your mom freak out when she sees me today?" Nicole asked, she was going over to Erik's house to play a new game, or that was the excuse.

"I did explain to her, but you never know! Grandma will be super excited though, she said she'll bake something"

"Wishes just glad you finally have a girlfriend!" Nicole said laughing.

"Let's just get you home" Erik said blushing profusely.

When they reached home, scotch jumped up and down and came running towards them with a Leo and Candace close behind.

"Very bad Nicole, you missed our Sunday morning adventure" Leo said.

Nicole tried to speak but was too overwhelmed by the dog licking her face.

"I saw a huge Bernard are the pet park today!" Candace said excitedly to Erik, "he was this big!" She said stretching her arms out as much as she could.

"You know! I could show you some pretty big dogs at my friend Blake's house"

"ahhh! Show me! Show me!" Candace said, her eyes glistening.

"Stop stealing all my sisters!" Leo said teasingly.

After everyone had calmed down, Nicole went up to her room. she knew where everything was placed in the room, she slowly felt the dresser desk. To the right was a photo of her parents, to the left was her ever smiling grandma and in the middle was her mom'a box. Minerva later told her that the storage room used to be Rachel's room. After she left of course they changed it into a storage room. She could see all her moms memories from that room, but she hesiated. She knew enough from what her granny had told her. The rebellious girl that fell in love with her sweet and silent father.

"It's been one weird year granny" Nicole said out loud, smiling. It's almost been a year since she came here, she reminisced about all the crazy things that happened after her granny died. She was still heart broken that she was gone, but now she knew people she never could have. She silently whispered a prayer to her granny, smiled and plopped onto her bed, and sleep came to her almost instantly.

And... We are officially done! After writing this for over a year, I love you all for staying and reading! This final chapter is dedicated to you! Every. Single. One. Of you. I never thought I'd let others see what I right some day, and I've had so much positivity from all of you!
