JK's POV
The sound of Yu Gyeom's laughter followed by the sound of cars speeding off from the parking lot could be heard faintly in the background. There was another sound I couldn't quite make out of. All that was resonating was the bass from its beats sending vibrations into my ears. I have succumbed to darkness, but I knew I was traveling. The sound of the engines rumbling nearby and the occasional car horns coming in and out materialized my assumption that I was driving a car.
It was taking a long time for my eyes to register into the pitch-black surroundings. But from what I can discern now were the three colors taking their turns to blink from a distance. As I squint to get clarity of what's ahead of me, a huge strike of a seemingly electromagnetic force came rushing to me, hitting me hard. I was sent lying flat on my back against solid ground.
I entered some kind of warp. The setting was slightly lighted this time, enabling me to see that I was still inside an automobile, laying not on the ground but from a reclined car seat.
Did I just fall asleep?
Wait, this is all too familiar.
The bass I heard was from the song blaring from the speakers. I could feel my feet quivering as the music played on. But shortly after, my seat automatically brought me upright followed by the track starting to fade away. It was replaced by the sound of the clock ticking, gradually booming as the stoplight came into view.
I found my fingers pounding on the steering wheel. My eyes felt really heavy as if I'd drift to sleep anytime.
Wait. I am already asleep. And I know that.
I was deeply bewildered, figuring out the missing piece to the puzzle I was about to finish. But my thoughts, the thoughts of this version of myself dreaming right now, were greatly confused too. Numbers began to show on my windshield like a countdown running rapidly.
104.
75.
40.
The heat of the red light scorched my eyes.
I can hear my troubled breathing. My right foot was already itching to step on the pedal. My hands were placed in between my thighs and back to the steering wheel alternately. It was like running through a scripted scene I've done a hundred times, forced to wait until I get an OK from the director.
I've been through this. This has happened before. I just couldn't put my finger on it.
Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. The clock was urging me to make a choice this instant.
I didn't even give it much thought, or maybe I did. I honestly think this wasn't the first time I had to make this decision, or maybe I'm just mistaken.
Without me anticipating, the car I was in pushed forward towards the front lane. I don't recall ever transitioning to drive. It's crazy.
I could hear screaming voices, violently cursing at me for overtaking. I was hysterically laughing though, enjoying the spur of the moment I just experienced. Billie Eilish's Bad Guy was the perfect soundtrack to this movie I'm in. I was banging my head, happily singing to the song's lyrics, feeling so good about the daredevil that I am.
But my gleeful episode was short-lived. Someone from the audience grabbed the remote control and muted everything.
What a killjoy.
Then, it occurred to me. I just found the last piece of the puzzle.
The warp disappeared and the layers and layers of filter seemed to have vanished. It all was crystal clear to me now.
