" GWENDOLYN MAXINE STACY. BELOVED DAUGHTER AND SISTER. MAY 3, 1995 - AUGUST 10, 2013." That's what was written on her gravestone. Peter would sit there for hours and hours ever single day. He visited her every day without fail. It's been 4 months. Four months since he lost the person he trusted most in the world. Heartbreak was a word too small to describe his feelings. Maybe mix in immense grief and guilt and you could come close.
He closed his eyes, and he saw her. He saw her smile, the cute little nose rub she did. He recalled every moment, every emotion, every second they shared. Because those were the best moments of his life. And he would do anything, anything, for one last kiss, one last hug, one last smile. He would give up being spider man if it meant her still being alive.
Gwen got into Oxford. They were going to move to England together. They were so close to being happy together. So close. If Peter would've known that the last time he kissed her would be the last time, he never would've stopped. He never would've let go. And when she fell to her death, it felt like someone was ripping his heart right out of his chest. He had to save her. He had to. It was as if time had slowed down. As he extended his web, one last feeble attempt to save Gwen, he held on to every shred of hope he had left. Gwen can't die. She wouldn't leave him all alone. She would be fine. She would tell him it's alright and kiss him. She would open her eyes tell him she loved him and they would go to England. But she didn't.
He hated himself. It's his fault. Everything. She's gone because he was selfish. He should've let her go. He should've listened to her dad and left her out of this. He will never, ever, forgive himself. And he will never ever forget her, Gwen, the love of his life, his companion, his best friend, the one person who knew his secret. She's gone, and she took Peter's heart with her.
6 MONTHS LATER
Peter went back to being spider man. Helping others took his mind off things. The pain eased with time. It no longer felt like someone was prodding his heart with an iron rod every time he thought of her. Although it still hurt so much it felt like a shard of glass was embedded in his heart forever. He knew deep down that nothing could ever heal his heart fully.
He went home, exhausted. He had to clean up quickly before Aunt May saw him. When he entered his room he could smell the delicious aroma from dinner. He was starving. He went to eat and Aunt May exclaimed "Surprise! I made Korean meatballs!" Korean meatballs. Those were Gwen's favourite, he remembered. But he pushed that thought right out of his mind. He couldn't allow himself to go through this again. He sat down.
Aunt may was chatting happily about what a great day she had at work. Something about a guy and his secret dog? Peter quickly gulped down the delicious meatballs and helped himself to another serving. Aunt May was still chatting away happily. Peter was so glad to see her happy. Aunt May was the only person left in his life. The only family he had. And no matter what, he would protect her. He smiled to himself. Thanking May, he excused himself.
Up in his room, it was a mess. There were papers everywhere. Science formulas, photographs, and a whole bunch of whatnot. It'd been this way since Gwen died....
As he was cleaning he saw a figure walking up to his house. It was female, with flaming red hair and a confident smile. She looked like one of those super popular girls he went to high school with. She was gorgeous. But not his type, he decided. Besides, he couldn't picture himself with anyone else. He watched as she rang the bell and gave a dazzling smile towards May. They Both laughed and chatted for a few minutes. Then May handed her a box that looked like food and she thanked May and started to leave. As she turned, she caught sight of Peter and gave a flirtatious grin. Instantly he blushed. But still, no attraction. He was still hung up on someone...
