"Who is that guy?" Clary got closer to Jace as the three watched two Shadowhunter train.
"That's Hodge Starkweather, our weapons trainer. And more important for us, a former Circle member," Jace replied. "After the uprising, Hodge repented and was sent to live and work here to make amends. But he's forbidden to ever leave the institute."
"And you trust him?" Olivia frowned.
"Yes," Jace glanced at her with a reassuring smile before leading them to him.
"Madeline," Hodge stared at Olivia making her shift awkwardly.
"Um, no I'm Olivia."
"Right. I- uh- you just look so much like your mother."
"My mother?" Olivia frowned.
"Hi, I'm Clary Fray," Clary smiled brightly at him making him turn to her.
"Jocelyn's daughter. Well, she was Jocelyn Fairchild when I knew her." Hodge smiled. "Madeline and her were two of my best friends."
"She's been kidnapped," Clary started. "By someone named Valentine and his men."
"By the Circle, Hodge." Jace finished.
"But that's impossible," Hodge shook his head. "Valentine's dead and the Circle died with him." And then he started choking, his Circle rune was burning making Olivia let out a gasp and rush to help him.
"Oh my god," she frowned, holding him up. "Are you okay? What's happening to y-, Jace what's happening to him?"
"I swore a vow never to speak of what we did. This is the Clave's way of making sure I keep that vow."
"We can't torture him Jace," Olivia frowned. She didn't care if they desperately needed answers. She wasn't letting him get hurt.
"Is there anyone else we can ask?" Clary asked.
"If the Circle really is back," Hodge continued after Jace shook his head and gently grabbed Olivia's hand, caressing her thumb, making her relax a bit. "And they've taken Jocelyn. Our leader... our leader of the Circle was Valentine Morgenstern."
Olivia tensed slightly. She had heard that name before. She didn't remember where or when, but she had. She was sure of it.
"We thought he wanted to protect humans like all Shadowhunters," Hodge continued. "But we never realised the lengths which Valentine was willing to go, the people he was willing to sacrifice. Most of humanity would die if we carried out Valentine's plan."
"But I-, I still don't understand," Olivia mumbled. "How does our mother relate to any of this?" Hodge looked down at her, a sorrowful look in his eyes when she said 'our mother.'
"Jocelyn was a member of the Circle as well," he continued after clearing his throat, looking away from his best friend's daughter.
The Fray sisters' eyes widened and they shared a shocked glance. Olivia moved away from Jace and wrapped her arm around Clary.
"No," Clary gasped, getting closer to her sister. "I- I can't believe it. My mother she-."
"The important thing is that Jocelyn left the Circle. And so none of this even matters, because Valentine died in a fire years ago." Hodge groaned and bent over when his rune burned him making Jace and Olivia rush to his help while Clary rolled her eyes.
"Oh my god, are you okay?. I-, I'm sorry, but we can't ask you to this." Olivia whimpered. She hated seeing people in pain.
Hodge smiled weakly at her, "You're just like your mother. She was always so kind and selfless, and hated seeing others hurt."
She bit her cheek, trying to brush off the statement. She had always told herself that she didn't care about her biological family, but the urge to ask him about her mother - the small chance of getting to know her - was too tempting.
"Liv," Jace whispered. "We don't have a choice. You understand that, Hodge, right?"
Hodge nodded, "Jace is right. Valentine nearly destroyed the Shadow World and humanity along with it. If he'd gotten the Cup-."
"Wait a minute-," Clary frowned. "My mother told me she hid something from someone. If it's this Cup-."
"Clary the mortal cup is the most important object in the Shadow World. Whoever has it can create more Shadowhunters. And in the wrong hands-."
"Control demons," Hodge finished. "If Jocelyn hid the cup from Valentine, she's in more danger than you can possibly imagine." He screamed in pain and fell to the ground.
"I hate to make you suffer like this," Clary frowned.
Jace noticed the troubled expression on Olivia's face and pulled her closer to him, stroking his thumb and making patterns on her back to calm her down.
"I'm so sorry," Hodge whispered to Olivia. "Your mother was only trying to protect the two of you. And now you must protect her. Stop Valentine before he destroys us all."

Olivia massaged her temple as she tried to process the information. Her sister's memory had been wiped, and hers was too, possibly. Dot was a warlock. And her mother's name was Madeline. That's all she was thinking about.
Her mother's name was Madeline. Her mother's name was Madeline. Her mother's name was Madeline.
She hated herself for wanting to know more. She hated herself for wanting to know about someone who abandoned her.
"Hey," Alec smiled at her when he and Jace walked towards her. "You okay?"
"Yeah," she breathed out. And then she scoffed, "No."
Jace grabbed her hand, intertwining their fingers together. Olivia usually would have pushed him away and said something snarky but she needed it. She needed someone to comfort her, she needed to know that someone was there for her. Even if it was two demon-killers.
"The guy outside-. The one who tried to capture me," she started, not noticing how Jace and Alec moth tensed and took protective steps towards her impulsively at the thought of her hurt. "He called me Olivia Hayes. Is there-, is there anyone named Hayes or Madeline or something? I ju-."
"We can check in the system," Jace said softly. She calmed down just by looking at him.
"Why do I feel like this?"
"Feel like what?" Alec frowned.
"I-I don't know. Comfortable. Safe around you. Like I can trust you."
They shared a glance and smiled at her.
"You'll understand soon, my love," Jace whispered. Olivia shut her eyes when she felt him softly press his lips on her forehead and sparks ignited in her body.
"Olivia," Clary yelled making her let out an annoyed sigh and look up at them. She smiled at them once before rushing to her sister.
