"It's been centuries since someone as young as you has become Santa's helper. You're what, thirteen?"

"Fifteen," she snapped.

Bernard looked surprised for a moment. "Hmm. Must be your attitude that makes you seem younger."

Allie felt the anger swirling in her chest, but Bernard continued. "And it's been just as long since someone as young as you felt the magic from the hat."

"I told you, I didn't feel any magic," Allie argued. "All I felt was a chill, and–"

"Does it always take a while to get stuff through your thick skull?" Bernard snapped, his patience finally running out. "Or are you just–"

Allie ripped her arm away, her jaw clenched. She tried to say something, but she couldn't get the words out. Finally, she grit out, "If you're just going to insult me, can I go back to my Dad?"

Bernard only kept walking, forcing Allie to follow. "Anyway, you, Allison, are now Santa's helper. And that means that anything Santa needs, you help him with. You'll always know what he needs, no matter what it is, or where you are at."

"Isn't this your job?"

"My job is to stay in the workshop. You have to go out on the sleigh."

When the curly haired elf said that, her face paled. Her hands began to shake again at the thought of having to fly in the sleigh all night. She stopped for a second, before continuing. Thankfully, Bernard was too busy lecturing her to realize.

"I have a question for you, Barrack."

"Bernard," the boy growled. "My name is Bernard."

"Okay," was Allie's sarcastic response. "Bernard. What if I don't want to do this?"

Gritting his teeth, it seemed to take Bernard all of his willpower to not scream. Instead, he snarled out, "Whether you want to or not, you felt the magic. "That's powerful. No one has felt the magic since 1702. You've got something—magic—inside of you."

"No I don't." Allie said, clenching her jaw. "I'm not a freak. Not like you."

Bernard's eyes flashed, and he began walking faster. "You have 11 months to get your life in order. So, you might wanna start right away."

Allie, despite how angry she was getting, knew she kind of deserved all this. Especially with how she would talk to Charlie and even her friends. She really had no right to get mad at Bernard, but anger was what she did best, so she, of course, got angry.

"In a couple of months, I'll come to your house so we can begin training."

"Training?"

"Elf training." Bernard responded.

They stopped in front of a door, and Bernard gestured towards it. "You get to stay here. Your Dad and brother are just down the hall. But, I'll see you in eleven months, Allison."
