CHAPTER 5:
BROKEN DREAM
...
Inside the large dim lighted room, a burly-looking man could be seen sewing a pair of onyx buttons onto a doll face. As he snip the white thread off from one of the doll's button eyes, a loud knocking on his wooden door caught the man away from his deep thought as he waited for the person to enter the room. He placed the doll down onto his lap and watched silently as his former student slowly emerged from the cold shadow.
Hitori stepped into the light and bowed slightly as he greeted his former teacher. "You call for me, Yaga-sensei?" he inquired as he straightened himself back up to meet him. His deep orange-purplish eyes glow briefly underneath the candle lights as he gave him a small smile.
The older man nodded in returned and slowly pulled out a folder from his knitting basket. He looked down at the name written on the cover and hesitantly gave it to him. "The higher-up requested you for a mission," he said as he waited for him to take the folder off his hand. "You'll be leaving first thing in the morning."
The younger man took the offered item and read through the details written on the piece of paper. 'It's a list of missing people. Most of them are working in the same construction company,' his mind whispered as he scanned through the report written by Akari-chan.
Based on the report, the case started when they were building an Onsen Inn on the side of a hill near Tajima City. The local folk around the area had told the construction company that the place was cursed by an evil spirit of a woman who hung herself inside the forest. But despite the initial warning, the company still continues with its project.
Along with the list of name are multiple reports of the building being caught on fire and landslides. Based on the reports, the fire started out of nowhere and would always occurs during the night. Even with all the misfortunes, they'd finished building the said Inn. However, before it could be open, the workers had disappeared.
'A special grade curse perhaps,' Hitori's mind mused as he looked through various pictures taken around the crime scene. "And what about the first years' students?" he asked the older man as he closed the folder and put it inside his jacket. "Who's going to supervise them for their next mission?"
"I believe Kiyotake-kun had volunteered himself for the job," Yaga answered as he placed his finished cursed doll inside his basket.
A moment of silence filled the air between the two men as a pair of thick, dark eyebrows raised in surprise. Hitori blinked and couldn't help but let out a huge, cheeky smile at the name. "Really?" he asked. A hint of amazement could be heard coating his voice as he pushed his hands into his pockets. "I never thought I would see the day Ijichi would volunteer himself to do Gojo's work. Willingly."
