Chapter Twelve

When we got back to the camp, Bellamy and Clarke made a speech to the others. They explained what happened, and why Murphy was no longer with us.

I didn't want to sleep in the drop ship tonight, so I just sat down on one of the chairs near a fire.

There was a funny thing about camp fires. They put me in a trance, and I could never help but think about my life. My future, my present, and my past.

Tonight, I was focused on my present.

Every single thought that I had about the present time, always seemed to lead back to Murphy.

I hadn't realized how much I seemed to truly care about him until I had almost lost him for good. I wasn't just angry that he was going to get killed for something that he didn't do, but I was terrified that I would lose him forever. My heart was beating out of my chest, so fast that I was convinced that it would simply give out on me. I had thought that it was the adrenaline at the time, but not anymore. It was because I was scared for his life.

If I were to speak honestly, I don't even know why I cared for him so much. He provoked me, and angered me, and tempted me to give into the rage that has slowly formed within me over the years. But he also made me happy, and I sympathized with him. We had been through similar situations. We had both been torn apart from one simple action that changed our lives forever.

My thoughts didn't leave Murphy, even after I closed my eyes.

An undetermined amount of time went by before I heard a noise in front of me.

I opened my eyes to see Bellamy standing over the fire, where a new log had just been placed.

"Sorry," he muttered. "I didn't mean to wake you."

I sighed, deciding not to go back to sleep again. He came and sat down beside me, and I could feel his eyes on my as I continued to watch the dancing flames.

"Stop it." I muttered. "Stop staring at me like that and either leave me alone, or say the words you're dying to tell me."

He seemed taken aback by my response, but spoke anyway. "I don't want us to be like this."

"Us? This is your fault, Bellamy. Not only did you not trust me, but you didn't listen to me either." I said, narrowing my eyes at him. "Murphy was innocent. He may have done and said things since we got down here that weren't exactly tolerable, but he hasn't killed anyone. Charlotte has, and you protected her instead."

"She was just a kid!"

"She was a murderer." I said, sighing and looking towards the fire. "She slayed her demon, Bellamy. She stabbed it right in the throat."

He stared at me silently, then leaned forwards, the previous anger seeming to leave his expression. "Look, I know you're mad about me not telling you why I'm here. But at least I told you everything. I haven't even told Octavia," He whispered. "I'm sorry, Ven. I didn't mean for this to happen. Any of it."

I looked back at him, not sure what to say.

"Please forgive me?" He asked, biting his lip. "I can't do this without you. We can put all of this behind us, I promise."

I looked down at the ground, then sighed again and stood up, walking over to him. "Fine. I'll forgive you."

He grinned at me, jumping up and wrapping me in a tight hug. "Good, because I've missed you as much as I missed Octavia."
