"Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday dear Xavierrrrr, Happy birthday to you" We all sang in unison as he blew out his candles.
My younger brother has just turned ten. I wish my parents were here to join us in celebrating. The last time I saw my mother was at Christmas in 2019. My father, on the other hand, is no longer alive. I just wish I could go back in time and hug him once more.
My Abuelo walks up to me with a knowing look on his face as I'm eating my cake, "You're in your thoughts again nieta," he says as he takes a seat next to me.
"Yeah, I'm just thinking about mom and dad," I said, sighing and smiling slightly. "I miss them."
"I know," he said as he took a seat next to me, "I miss them too, every single day."
"But look," he continued, grabbing my hand, "every time I think of your father, I think of how he's watching over us from above, protecting us, and I remind myself that your mother is fighting to keep our country safe, and most importantly, her family safe."
"I know tus padres are so proud of the two of you and how far you've come," he said as we both looked over to where Xavier was sitting laughing with his friends. He returned his gaze to me.
"Nieta tu animas por favor cheer up," he said with a smile "I know it's hard my dear but please I don't like seeing you like this. and let's try to give your brother a fun birthday with positive spirits okay"
"Okay Abuelo," I said with a smile "your right".
"WHO'S READY FOR THE PINATA?" announced my Abuela. The children all jumped up and down with delight.
"ME, ME" they all chanted. I stood up and walked toward my brother
"not so fast everyone!" I began " the birthday boy has to go first," I said pulling him to the middle of the room
"Yeah, everyone, watch how it's done," Xavier said, rolling up his sleeves as I wrapped the blindfold around his eyes.
All of his friends chanted, "Xavier, Xavier, Xavier." As I watched him swing and miss, I couldn't help but laugh.
I took a look around. Everyone appeared to be in a good mood. Laughter filled the room, but something was missing. My parents.
I started to have this burning feeling in my chest and tears filled my eyes
"Arianna" my Abuela whispered in my ear next to me " your leg," she said looking down.
I looked down as my leg started to become see-through. I immediately ran. I couldn't let anyone see me like this. Only mi Abuelos, mom, dad, and brother know about my ability and it isn't safe to use it around other people.
I wish I had better control of it because having my powers randomly go off is dangerous, especially in a society where people hate us metas.
I sat on the curb outside trying to control my breathing and calm down I put my head in between my legs and started thinking happy thoughts. But I couldn't stop images of my parents from flooding my brain. I immediately broke down. I couldn't stop the tears from flowing down my face. My body was completely invisible at this point.
As I hear footsteps in front of me, I look up. I'm approached by a man in a brown trench coat. how can he see me?
"Just focus on your breathing," he said as he crouched in front of me, "and try repeating the word 'visibility' in your head if you want to become visible again."
