How to get over writer's block

Today I will be discussing how I get over writer’s block. This may not personally work for everyone, but it works for me.

!. Look around at your surrounds. Chose three different objects. Write a short story (and I mean short) about them.

This usually helps me “warm up” for the actual writing. For example, one time I was in a classroom after a test, and saw a map, pencil and chess board. I then proceeded to take the pencil on an adventure into the map, with the aid of the knight from the chess board. They are going to sound stupid; I’m just letting you know, but it helps you get your rhythm and the right state of mind.

II. Think about where your character needs to go next. What is their motivation? What obstacles can you put in their way?

I always plot out my stories beforehand and make an in-depth character document. Make sure in each chapter there is a clear beginning, middle and end. Think about what makes your character wake up each morning, and then try and take that away, and have them still survive the task. Don’t have too many filler chapters.

III. Lastly don’t think about it too much.

Don’t stress about writing, it should be an escape. Let yourself make mistakes. First drafts are for that word vomit going on in your head. Then, once you have words on paper, edit away. I promise you will feel better once the words are out. As Maya Angelou said once, “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside of you.”

Hope this helps!
