I’m just going to be upfront with you, I’m a fangirl. Which means I’m probably certifiably insane.
Just a warning.
But let’s get right into it, shall we?
1. I’m gonna start off with a classic. The Giver by Lois Lowry. Okay, so It’s not
technically a classic, but the way it’s written, it feels like one. It’s a dystopian story
about a boy named Jonas, who lives in an advanced society that has converted
to sameness. Sameness was introduced to take away pain and suffering, but
also greatly reduced emotion. On the day of the ceremony of twelve, where all
the twelves learn what their future career will be, Jonas is chosen for a very
special job.
2. Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger. These books are sort of a
hidden gem I found at Target one day. I only have one friend (Irl) who has read all
8.5 of them (It’s a bit confusing, but 8.5 is sort of a series guide with a novella at
the back. The author is writing two more books in the series, and the next, which
is called Stellarlune, will be released on November 8th, 2022). It starts off with a
girl named Sophie Foster, a twelve year old highschool senior. Sophie has
always been unusually smart for her age, and one day, when her class takes a
trip to a museum, things take a very unexpected turn. One which involves
underground organizations, fluffy dinosaurs, and a pair of teal eyes.
3. Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan. The detail, the character
development, the action, the humor! This series of five books has it all, and will
likely have you coming back for more. Of course, that isn’t too hard, since the
author wrote four spinoff series! Two are full installments of five, and two are
trilogies. Percy Jackson is a troubled kid… sort of. He attends a boarding school
called Yancy Academy for, you guessed it, troubled kids. When Percy, his best
friend Grover Underwood, and the rest of their sixth grade class take a trip to an
art museum, things get really dangerous, really fast.
4. Harry Potter, by J.K. Rowling. These books are… wow. Magic and mystery and
betrayal and love… just amazing. All seven books! Harry potter is a ten year old
boy living in a cupboard under the stairs in his aunt and uncle’s house. His
parents died in a car crash when he was only a year old, and he has been living
with his neglectful relatives ever since. But one fateful day, Harry’s eleventh
birthday, his life changes completely for the better… or worse.5. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. This is a fast paced, action packed, very
graphic trilogy that is bound to make you cry. Trigger warning, they get very
violent at times. Katniss Everdeen is sixteen and living in the seam, the poorest
part of District Twelve. When her sister gets reaped for the hunger games, a
death match aired on live TV, Katniss volunteers to go in her sister, Prim’s place.
Mentored by an alcoholic and escorted by a Capitol freak, does Katniss have any
chance of winning?
6. Divergent by Veronica Roth. This is another dystopian trilogy set in futuristic
North America, much like The Hunger Games. This series has a lot of graphic
shooting, and slightly more mature romance (Not smut, just some intense
makeout sessions). Steer clear if that’s not your thing. Tris Prior is nearing the
day of her choosing ceremony, where she will pick what faction she will spend
the rest of her life in. But her aptitude test, which decides what faction she would
be best in, comes back with three results, something almost unheard of.
So yeah. These are just a few of my absolute favorite fantasies and dystopias that I have read
within the last year or so. I hope you enjoy some of them!
