The Drive

It's a brisk August morning; clouds hang low, mist clings to your clothes as you get into your warmed car to head to work. As you take to the streets you notice it's darker than usual. The air smells like a campfire. People are out in the dark wet beside the roads, loitering down the side streets you take to work. A few of the people snap their heads up, watching as you drive past. Your brake lights illuminate their features for just a moment - long enough for you to register that some are moving sharply, as though their ligaments and joints are frozen while others are moving so fluidly that it seems their bones have completely melted into their muscle tissue.

"Druggies." You scoff, turning up the radio as they fade into the background and out of sight.

Transients had been becoming more of an issue in your area, and it was no secret that the drinking and drug problem was getting out of hand. It disturbs and saddens you as you drive away.

You bring your vehicle to a stop at a light and wait, humming along to the tune on the radio when a hard bump alerts you to someone who has run into your car. Heart racing you put the vehicle into park and wrench your torso around to see this psycho. He stumbles back and runs into your car again, this time moving further forward, closer to the back door. His arms move to strike the window. You see he has a relatively round, dark lump in his grasp. Rage flares up as you watch him attack your car again. The light is still red, someone has pulled up behind you a safe distance away as they watch the unfolding scene. Their face is one of disbelief as they pull out their cell phone. Your window cracks sharply as your attacker smashes the weapon in his fist against the glass. His fist is cut up and bloody, he's obviously not in his right mind. Concern clenches in your chest mingling with your fear and anger.

The light for the opposing traffic has just switched to yellow, meaning you'll be able to drive away soon.
