On The Road Again

"Look, let's just get stuff together in case." You stress. "A back up plan. We can get the rest of the house boarded up and then work on bags to leave if you want?"

They agree reluctantly. You help them finish the back room, moving into the living room when an odd sound, a familiar sound, makes you drop your hammer.

You turn to face your partner, recognizing the fear on their face, knowing it's mirrored on your own. They're here. Hesitantly you peek out the window. It throws you for a second to see your neighbor crouched over the bloody corpse of his cat.

"Is it...?"

You only nod, afraid to speak.

"Right." They set their hammer down, "let's go."

You both move into action. Each of you grabbing the largest bag you have on hand, stuffing it with food and medical supplies, cash and clothes. You grab your phone chargers and toiletries. It take minutes between the two of you.
You meet up in the back room, the safest room. Quietly as possible you leave out the back window - handing the supplies off, setting them beside the wall. You're terrified - rightly so. Quietly you sneak around to the lot where the car sits, mangled and bloody, but sound. Your significant other jumps into the drivers seat, pausing when they notice you haven't immediately followed suit.

On whim you grab the mangled rebar and any other heavy 'weaponry' you can find immediately laying around as your significant other pops the trunk from within the locked vehicle, you shove the 'weapons' into the trunk before loading up.

They glance at their phone as it vibrates, "My sister." They say, looking at you.

You nod, "where?"

"The highway-"

The roar of the engine cuts you off but they've heard. They nod their acknowledgment, blasting out of the open garage door and onto the road. The sky is dark, the stars look like a sickness in the sky there's so many of them. The horizon to the south glows orange, smoke billowing as the fire rages and devours.
