Your tires squeal as you race out of the parking lot as the radio switches to an emergency broadcast. It's darker out now, rain is falling but you don't know if it will help the fires that have broken out sporadically around town. People seem to have deserted the streets, cop cars and personnel are loitering around businesses. The emergency broadcast is still playing. You turn it up despite it grating on your nerves, making your anxiety worse. A voice finally breaks the incessant beeping.
'Please stay off the main roads. Get to your homes. The US Government has declared martial law nation wide. A strict curfew will be enforced. Military Personnel will be dispatched to all areas as soon as able. Lock your doors, windows, and remain inside.'
You pull over, your heart racing. A sickening crunch and some screams make you freeze. The lights at the house beside you, the street lights around you, all pop off leaving you in a darkness that hides the monsters you thought you stopped seeing when you were ten. You switch on your headlights in paranoia. Your mind is racing. You've heard of martial law but never really understood it. Cops with their sirens blaring race past. You try to see to the intersection ahead but you feel like you're floating. You can't really tell what's going on.
Shakily you back the vehicle up, gaining speed as the message replays in between stretches of high pitched beeps.
Martial Law. Curfew. Military. Police. Crime.
You peel out on the dirt road, your back end swinging out wide. With horror you see the person standing on the side of the road too late. The back end of your vehicle smacks into them making them fly comically, like they would have were you in a comic or cartoon. Everything in you freezes as the body lands just feet away. They look so broken.
