#1: Even though Jack is emotional he doesn't like to cry so he rarely does. When Jack was forced to become a scab to protect his friends by Pulitzer he was lead down to the basement where he slept and when Weisel left he cried harder than he had in years. He was giving up the love of all the family he had left in order to protect them and they couldn't know. It broke him and he sobbed as quietly as he could into his pillow until he finally fell asleep hours later with tears on his cheeks. The next day Weisel mocked him about it, teased him, called him a baby. He used this anger to help fuel his resolve to keep his friends safe. This is also why Jack told everyone to be quiet when they made the papers on the strike because he knew from experience that things could be heard through the floor.
