Mom woke me up in the morning.
"Come on sweetie. Time to get up," she said.
"I don't want to go to school today," I said. "My stomach hurts."
"Oh baby," Mom said, sitting on my bed beside me. "Blaine and Morgan will be there too. Just give Jill some space, okay? Give her some time."
"What if she never speaks to me again?" I asked.
"Well, that'll be her loss, won't it? Because you are amazing and funny and smart. And once she's done being mad, she'll come around. You'll see."
I doubted Mom very much, but I knew I did have to go to school. So I got up, got dressed and went downstairs.
Rosie saw me and smiled and called my name from her high chair.
"Hi Rosie posey," I said, as mom put breakfast on the table.
"SaSa!" She cried happily.
After breakfast, the three of us walked to school and again, Jill wasn't waiting. I wasn't expecting her to. But Blaine and Morgan were.
"Hey," they said as I came up to them.
"We don't really get why Jill's so mad at you, but she messaged us both last night and told us to stop being your friend. She said you lied to her about your seizures or something. We tried to tell her you were just embarrassed to tell her. But I guess she's happy being mad," Blaine said.
"Anyway, we think she's being stupid and we're not going to stop being your friend because you didn't want her to know about your seizures," Morgan shrugged. "She's being dumb."
"Thanks guys," I smiled.
The three of us went into the school together. I felt a little better. Until we passed the office and the principal called me.
"Samantha Joseph. I'd like to see you in my office. Now."
"Uh oh," Blaine said. "See you."
"If you survive..." Morgan smirked.
I swallowed hard and went into the office.
Mr. Jones pointed to his office door and I went in and sat down.
"Miss Joseph," he said sternly. "You left school grounds without permission yesterday."
"I know," I said quietly.
"Would you care to explain?" He asked.
"Not really," I said, even quieter.
"Samantha, we all know what you've been through and you have had tremendous growth in the past year. Including after your accident in the fall. Running from school is out of character for you. Your mother called to let us know you were gone and safe, but Samantha, why did you run?"
"I got in a fight with Jill. She's really mad at me and in gym she kept throwing the ball at my head and when the teacher made her sit down because of it, she looked at me with so much hate, I couldn't, I, I'm sorry," I started crying.
The principal looked at me with sympathy.
"Samantha, normally we would give a student who left school grounds without permission a suspension or detention. So consider this a warning that if you leave school grounds again, during school hours, without permission, you will get a detention. I'm only giving you a warning because of your past. You have shown tremendous growth since last October, and I'm really impressed. You would barely speak to anyone at first. Now you're a leader in your classes, you're quite a remarkable young woman. But if another student is bothering you, you need to come to a teacher or the office."
"I know. It's just, Jill and I are, were, best friends. And now she hates me."
"What happened? Can I ask that?"
"I guess," I sighed. "I slept at her house on Saturday and I had a seizure. I never told her I get seizures sometimes and I think that's why she's mad."
"The ones your parents noted because of your accident in the fall?"
I nodded.
"I see. Well, if Jill does or says anything else that makes you feel you need to run, please go to a teacher or come to the office. Okay? During school hours, you're our responsibility, and we want to make sure you, and your fellow students are safe."
"Okay," I said quietly.
"Okay. Now, here's a hall pass to get to class, and here's a tissue. Blow your nose, wipe your eyes, and then, when you're ready, off to class with you, okay?"
I nodded as I wiped my eyes and blew my nose. I took the pass and left the office and headed to class.
"You good?" Blaine asked as I came into class. I nodded.
I tried to focus on my classes. I'd only done a little homework the night before so I knew I was going to be a little behind, but I'd figure it out tonight.
On the way to lunch, Morgan found Blaine and I in the hallway and the three of us went to the cafeteria together.
"Jill is really really mad," Morgan said. They had math together. "She's not talking to me because I refuse to stop talking to you. Honestly, it's ridiculous and immature."
I shrugged.
"I can't control how she's reacting. Maybe one day she'll listen to me. And it stinks that she's so mad. But I'm really glad you two aren't."
"Shit. Why would we be mad you didn't tell us you have seizures sometimes? You didn't tell us Tyler fucking Joseph was your dad right away either. And that's way more important," Blaine laughed.
"Oh, yeah. Jill told me to tell you, Blaine, that you can, uh, 'go suck a rock if you're also going to keep talking to that lying liar who lies' I think is how she put it."
"Suck a rock!?" Blaine laughed. "Has she not see the food here? That would be an upgrade!"
The three of us burst into laughter. I caught a glimpse of Jill standing in line behind us. She looked furious and got out of line and stormed off. Which made us laugh that much harder.
