Sam was taken back the minute we arrived at the hospital. I was pushed out. She was considered a trauma and they don't allow anyone back with trauma cases. As we learned in California.

I sat down and put my head in my hands as Jenna came rising in with Rosie on her hip.

"Have they said anything?" Jenna asked, sitting beside me.

I shook my head. Jenna wrapped her free arm around me as I started sobbing. I felt like this might have been preventable. If we'd just gone to her game, if we'd just made sure to tell her we'd miss the game. If we had just forced her to speak to us, would we be here?

"Her heart stopped," I sobbed. "Her heart stopped. She wasn't breathing."

Jenna just held me.

"SaSa," Rosie said, pointing towards the emergency room doors.

It started me sobbing again. How would we explain this to Rosie if Sam didn't make it this time?

Rosie was smiling and clapping and saying Samantha's name over and over again.  She kept pointing at the doors to the emergency room.

Samantha POV

It's dark again.  How is it dark again?  I walked into the kitchen hoping to get breakfast and get out before Mom and/or Dad tried to talk to me. But as soon as I walked into the kitchen and saw them both there, it went completely dark.

Now I'm just sort of floating? I think. It feels a little like floating.  No, wait.... There's a light.

If I go towards it, what will I find?

I went through the light and found myself standing in ... a hospital?  I was in a room. There were a bunch of doctors and nurses. They were rushing around and talking really fast and working on someone.

I saw a set of doors and went through them. I shouldn't be here. How did I even get here?

I wandered around, being careful not to get in anyone's way. No one paid any attention to me.  I saw a sign that said 'waiting room', so I went that way. I figured I should be out of everyone's way there. When I opened the doors I saw Mom and Dad and Rosie. Rosie looked over and called my name.

"Hi Rosie posey!" I said. She smiled and clapped her hands and said my name over and over and kept pointing at me. Mom and Dad were holding each other and crying.

"Guys, why are you crying?" I asked. "I know I wasn't talking to you, but you missed my game and I was really excited for Uncle Josh to come see us play. And you didn't even text me!"

Neither of them looked up when I spoke. Great. Now they're giving me the silent treatment?

"Mom? Dad?" I said, coming a bit closer. Rosie looked up at me.

"SaSa!" She sang.

I felt a tugging feeling in my stomach and stumbled backwards a bit. Rosie looked at me with confusion.

"SaSa?" She asked. Dad looked up and looked right at me.

"Dad!" I said.  His eyes were red. He'd been crying.  Mom too.

"Mom! Dad!"  I cried. "Please talk to me!"

There was that pull in my stomach again, and I fell back even further.

"Is that a tear?" I heard from somewhere around me. "Is she, is she crying?"

Where was that voice?

Suddenly I felt a huge jolt and that pulling sensation in my stomach was so strong, it pulled me right through the doors and right through walls and people.

I opened my eyes again and was surrounded by doctors and nurses and a bright light above me.

"Hey," one of the nurses said, coming into my line of sight, and smiling at me. "Welcome back."

Welcome back? I didn't go anywhere.

"I'll go get the parents," someone said. I felt my arm moved and then placed down. I was covered with a blanket.

"You gave everyone quite a scare this morning. I'd ask if you were trying to get out of school, but it's Saturday," the nurse smiled at me.

Mom and Dad came rushing into the room.

"We'll give you a few minutes with Sam, before we send her up to the ICU. But she's going to be okay," I heard the nurse say.

Mom and Dad rushed over Rosie smiled at me.

"SaSa," she said.

"Hi, baby," Mom said. "How do you feel?"

There was a tube in my throat so I couldn't answer her. I shrugged. I think.

"Sam," Dad said, before breaking down into tears. I moved my hand towards him. He felt my hand on his and grabbed my hand and held it, kissing it.

"We're so sorry, baby," Mom was saying. "We should have explained what happened the day of your game. We're so, so sorry. We never thought this would happen!"

I was getting tired. I reached for Mom who took my hand as I drifted away into sleep.
