April raced into the lair, trying to balance the pizza boxes and the bags of new clothes from the mall.
"Guys! Pizza's here!" She shouted as she turned the corner into the kitchen. She was greeted by Mikey flying into the room and nearly crashing into her, snatching the tower of pizza boxes in the process.
"Yes!" He grinned as he sprinted out, "It's all mine!"
Seconds later, April heard the shouts of protest from the others, followed by what sounded like an intense wrestling match.
"Alright, alright!" Mikey surrendered and paraded back into the kitchen, setting down the boxes and joining the frenzy of turtles snatching pizza slices.
Donatello glanced up to see April stifling a laugh.
"Whoa, hang on guys," He said, "April needs some food too."
He flashed her a gap toothed smile, making April's heart swell.
"So?" Raphael rolled his eyes, taking another piece, "If she's hungry, she can get her own pizza."
Donnie frowned slightly at his brother before handing April a piece of pepperoni deliciousness.
"So, what's in the bags?" Leonardo inquired, gesturing toward April's pile of newly bought merchandise.
"It's for the dance tomorrow night," The teen girl replied casually, eyeing her slice of pizza and taking a bite.
"Dance?!" Mikey instantly perked up, turning his attention away from the three slices of pizza stuffed in his mouth, "Why didn't you tell me?! We could've bought matching shades!"
"What makes you think you're going, shell brain?" Raph smacked Mikey upside the head, turning the spunky turtle's orange mask askew.
"It's to raise money for the effort to clean up the city," April answered quickly, "After the invasion, everyone has been trying to help the recovery along."
"So I'm guessing you're going with Casey?" Leo assumed, earning a look of disappointment from Donnie.
Honestly, April didn't understand why the brothers thought she'd be into Jones. He was a punk hockey player who could be a good friend, but wasn't worth her time when it came to dating.
"No, he has hockey practice tomorrow," She lied, taking another bite of her pizza. Secretly, Casey had already asked April, but the redhead had turned down his offer.
"So you're going alone?" Raph asked, raising an eye ridge.
Deep down he cared for her safety just as much as his other brothers.
"Wrong again. I'm going to hang out with some friends of mine."
"Ooh!" Mikey said excitedly, "Can I see?"
"See what?" April asked, confused.
"Your outfit, duh! I need to see what color bow tie to wear with you!" The orange banded turtle blurted.
April giggled at his childish behavior, nodding her consent.
Mikey pulled out her dress: a bright yellow baby doll dress that went down to her knees. A small line of tiny flowers started at the shoulder and encircled the dress, and the skirt was fashioned so that when she twirled, it would billow out like a beautiful bloom.
"Nice!" Mikey exclaimed as he pulled her new pearl white flats out of another bag, and a delicate pair of earrings from another. He looked at the bottom of the last shopping bag.
"Whoa..." he marveled, pulling a crystalline diadem out.
The brothers stared in awe at the headjewelry. It consisted of tiny flowers, carefully crafted in small bunches and hung on a delicate silver chain. Tiny crystals were inlaid in the centers of the blossoms, with the occasional crystal hanging from it by a small silver string.
"Dude, where'd you get this?" Mikey inquired, gently fingering a bloom, "It looks like it costs, like, a kajillion dollars!"
April walked over and took the diadem from him, looking at it lovingly.
"It belonged to my mother," She said, her voice sounding far-off and nostalgic, "Dad found it and told me she wanted me to wear it to my first dance."
"It's amazing. The craftsmanship is absolutely impeccable," Donnie commented absentmindedly, before blushing at his nerdiness.
"Thanks, D," April said, placing it back into the bag and blushing at his adorable behavior.
"Well, I don't know about you guys," Raph said, breaking the momentary silence, "But I'm bored. I'll be watching TV."
"Hang on, Raph," Leo intervened, "Space Heroes is on, and I already missed yesterday's episode."
"I am not watching your dorky show," Raph insisted, racing out of the room with Leo in tow.
"Wait a minute, guys!" Mikey hollered, "I was gonna play video games! No fair!" He ran out, leaving Donnie and April alone.
"Er, um, I... erm... uh.. I'll be in the lab," Donnie mumbled quickly, giving up his attempt at small talk and beginning to walk out.
"Hey Donnie?" April started.
The intelligent turtle whipped around.
"I have some science homework," The redhead continued, "But I have absolutely no idea what heterozygous and homozygous mean..."
Donnie grinned, showing the gap in his smile the teen girl couldn't help but find endearing.
"I can help with that, if you want," He volunteered.
"Really? That would be awesome!" April exclaimed, retrieving a biology textbook from another bag and hurrying to the lab.
"You're a lifesaver, Donnie!" She chirped and practically skipped to the lab. She didn't notice the look of longing on her friend's purple-masked face.
