Chapter 26: drowning tales
Piper woke up struggling to breathe after going through the power that her abilities had created, at first she couldn't work out what was making it so hard for her to breathe until she realised that it was due to the water that she currently taking in as she flapped around under the dark and cold water trying to swim to the surface as her instincts kicked in. It was when Jace jumped in after her that she realised a piece of seaweed was wrapped around her ankle making it impossible for her to swim to the surface until Jace used his hidden dagger to cut her free before helping her to swim and to get out of the water. It was only as Piper was all on all fours coughing up the water that she had swallowed while underwater that she realised that somehow her portal had taken them to the one place that they wanted to be in since everyone else had left them which was Idris as she knew all too well from the familiar surroundings that they were at lake Lyn.
" hey, you okay? You didn't take in too much water, did you?" Jace said as he gently pushed her wet dark locks away from her face to allow him to Jace a better look at her as he tried to make sure she was okay
" I'm fine and come on, we both know that those stories about lake Lyn and her water are just bedtime tales that parents tell little shadowhunters from going rogue" Piper said shrugging off his concern
" if you say so... I can't believe you actually created a portal to Idris, how?" Jace said as he helped her to her feet as they both looked around, suddenly finding it weird to be back in their homeland again
" you think I know? One minute I'm panicking about the intruder alert and then the next there's a portal in front of me." Piper said knowing that things just got a little more complicated wit her new powers
" Piper, you just created a portal which is something that no one expect a warlock can do" Jace said trying to stress the importance of what just happened as he remembered her earlier worries with her blood
" I know that! I don't know how I did it, all I remember is the alarm going off and wanting to leave the institute then the portal appeared" Piper said as she began to move towards the forest near the lake leaving him behind
" where are you going?" Jace said wondering how she could be drowning one moment to going head first into the action the next as he decided to follow her since he knew she had a habit of finding trouble
" well it just so happens that the cabin I was telling you about isn't that far from here. Look, there is a reason why that awful place is stuck in head and why my portal took us here so I'm going to find out" Piper said sounding mor determined and stronger than Jace had heard her sound lately
" at least put this on, you'll freeze to death otherwise" Jace said taking off the black hoodie he had been wearing before handing it to her since she was only wearing a sports bra and yoga pants with her black sneakers
" I forget how much of a gentleman you could be when you want to.... we need to move quickly, we can't be out here when it's dark" Piper said looking around the woods almost preparing for an attack
" that's an understatement, this part of Idris is filled with notorious feral werewolf packs. I've read the same reports that you have" Jace said giving her a look as she smirked a little at his comment
" was that voluntarily or were you forced to by Alec? And I've done more than just read about it, I ran into one of the packs when I was kid when we were staying here" Piper said remembering her past
" once again Valentine gets the best father of the year award... what happened?" Jace said knowing that while he knew a lot of her time with Valentine, there was still things that she couldn't tell him yet
