When my mind can no longer remember my name
I would always like it to recall
Something near and dear to meThis may not be the case for some
But to me
It is something I look forward to
Every single yearOn new years eve
We set out every single cracker we were able to find and try
And slice cheeses of varying types
And little rounds of pepperonis and salamis and garlic sausagesAnd we ring in the new year
With pop
Or mixed drinks
And meat
And cheese
And crackersNow that I'm older
We've added things
Like soft cream cheeses of chive and garlic and whatnot for dad
And oysters in sunflower oil for mom
And a big batch of fresh prawns
With spicy dipping saucesThis year
We also had a big bowl
Of fresh red and green grapes
Which is something we'll take onto next yearAs simple as it may seem
This thing my family does
Every new years eve
And every day after until we use it all up
Will always bring me
The most childlike joy
Even as I get olderThank you
Mom and Dad
For something so simple
But also something worth cherishing
Forever
