Levi's pov

The door closed behind her. The cadet I once knew.

"Out with it four-eyes." I pressed the scientist. Not only did they ruin the chance of speaking to you, but also promised to share something important with me. "Don't waste my time."

Hanji cleared their throat, a serious expression painted across their features. A rare occurrence.

I watched them shuffle their feet around, there was something odd about seeing them like this. Usually they're here to either annoy me, or give me more paperwork to do.

What were they going to tell me?

"I've got news about the search." I shot up, standing straight as a stick.

"Already?" I expected the sloppy military police to need a bit more time. For the first time they might actually live up to their title.

I listened eagerly for the next part.

"It's nothing much but...I thought you'd like to hear it anyway."

"Hurry up four- eyes, I haven't got all day." I took a few steps closer, not wanting to miss a single word.

"Ah, of course Levi...So, earlier today the military police reported back to us." Hanji paused to reveal a paper scroll they had in their pocket. "Claiming to have found the dead body of the suspect."

My eyes widened, this is certainly more than I had hoped for. Then again, there is no guarantee it's them.

"But, as you can see here," They pointed to a sentence on the mp signed scroll. "It was quickly discovered that the way the person had supposedly stabbed themselves, was a spot on the neck almost impossible to reach yourself..."

"In other words, a false lead." I concluded through gritted teeth.

"Most likely yes." Hanji sighed, giving me an apologetic smile.

How dare they toy with me like this? As if attempting to take the most precious thing in my life away from me wasn't bad enough.

I turned away from Hanji. Angry with the person I'd sworn to find, angry with the mp's for not doing more, and angry with the one who saw them that day. Who could have put an end to this before it even began.

My nails dug into the flesh of my palms.

Myself.
