"Ava run!" I heard Hunter yell above the noise of the explosion.
I did as I was told, ignoring the high pitched wail off in the distance.
"What was that?!" I yelled.
"That's a Banshee demon, I'll explain a different time the many number of reasons you don't want to be anywhere near it. For now just run!" Hanna hollered at me.
Nothing more needed to be said, I ran as fast as my legs would carry me. I ran like the wind, but I didn't see a stray branch that was on the ground. I tripped over it, and went crashing down. I yelped in pain, trying to get up, but it was no use.
"Ava!" Hunter said running back to where I had fallen.
"I think my foot's broken." I said gritting my teeth.
Without saying anything he just scooped me up in his arms and continued to run.
"Hanna, run over there. We need to figure out the plan." Hunter said pointing to where Trey and David were standing nest to the car.
My heart was hammering in my chest. The screaming continued, making the hairs on my neck stand on edge. It sounded like a woman screaming in pain. It was horrifying.
"What's the plan boss?" Trey asked once we reached them, fanning the smoke away from his face.
Hunter had this wild look in his eyes but he answered calmly and evenly, "Hanna, you go to the rest stop and keep everyone calm, I think I saw Summer go there. Trey and David I have weapons in the trunk for you guys." He said opening it and pulling out a silver blade and holding it in his other hand. "But try to fend her off with your powers. I saw a shed a little further down, I'm going to bring Ava there. Be careful you guys."
They all nodded solemnly, but I was angry. Why couldn't I join the fight? I could heal my broken foot after all. I put my hand on my foot and thought of what I had to in order to heal the broken bone. I felt the familiar icy feeling in my fingertips, but then it stopped.
"No." I muttered under my breath.
"This isn't up for discussion." Hunter said, scolding me like I was a child.
"I'm not talking about that. My powers, they're not working."
Trey opened his fist and looked like he was concentrating hard. "You have got to be kidding me." He said angrily, "She's right."
I got this twisted feeling in the pit of my stomach.
I saw Hunter swallow hard and then say, "Okay, grab whatever weapons you can. Be extremely cautious, you now what these Banshee's are capable of. Hanna, warn Summer."
Summer! It hit me like a ton of bricks. "Don't trust Summer. She knew this was coming. She played us this whole time."
Hunter opened his mouth to say something when another terrifying cry rang through the air. It was closer this time. "No time to mull over this.Everybody GO! I'll meet you back here. Got it?"
"Got it." They all said in unison.
Hunter started to run, holding me close against him. My hands were tight around his neck I was scared I would choke him. The screaming wouldn't stop. It got worse by the second. I closed my eyes, and buried my head in his chest. I was trying to drown out that horrible sound by Hunters thump-thumping of his heart.
"We're almost there." I heard him say gasping for air.
I was too shaken to answer him, so I nodded into his body.
