Chapter 17
I got a text the next morning from Hanna.
H: heyyy, how u feeling for a well deserved dunkin run?
I smiled, happy everything was good between us. I answered;
Sure :) be there in ten minutes.
I dressed warmly making sure to wear a scarf to cover my scar and gloves for my hands. It was chilly, but not really hat and glove weather. I was just über paranoid about accidentally shooting fire and burning someone's pants off.
I grabbed my wallet and told my family I was meeting a friend and the Dunkin Donuts a few blocks away. I ordered my usual order, ice coffee; milk, sugar, whip cream, and sat down to wait for her. As I was sipping my yumminess, Hanna slid into the seat across from me.
"Hey," she said cheerily
"What's up?" I asked her
I was still shaken up from last night and my hands couldn't stop shaking no matter how tight I held onto the coffee.
"Not a lot, but David called an emergency meeting. About last night." She said
"David?" I asked confused.
This wasn't right. Hunter was their pack leader they wouldn't do anything without his consent.
"I thought Hunter was in charge."
She bit her lower lip, "David is his 'second in command', or so you would call it."
"Hanna... What aren't you telling me? What's wrong with Hunter? What did I do to him?" I asked fear stricken
"Hunter's okay, he's just very exhausted. We're not exactly sure what's going on, or why he's not healing as fast as he should be. That's why we're having this meeting. He will be back to normal soon, I promise. I'm serious Ava. One thing you don't have to worry about us, is sugarcoating. We don't sugarcoat anything, no matter how painful." She said
My body started to shake. I knew she was telling the truth, and that he would be okay, but the fact that I caused all of this chaos, I couldn't handle it. I was the monster that hurt Hunter, and Hanna, and god only knows who else I'm gonna hurt next. I had to tell Hunter I never meant for this to happen.
"Okay fine, but I want to see him. I need to tell him something." I said braver than I felt
I had to man up, this was my life now, there was no going back.
She smiled, "I'll make sure of that sweetheart. Now grab your coffee, and let's go."
We were on our way. We hopped a train and got out on 42nd street.
We zipped through the busy streets of manhattan completely unnoticed. I guess I finally understood why they chose the Big Apple as their hide away. They would be able to get around without attracting attention. That was one of the things I loved about this city, you could just be yourself in the streets. It was so easy to get around and be completely unassuming. The sights and the sounds of the big city made me feel at home. I have lived here my entire life and yet, every time I go downtown it feels like the first time.
We passed the tkts steps with a whole bunch of tourists on them. I used to wonder why people came to visit New York. I means it's dirty and polluted, we don't have palm trees, we have skyscrapers. I figured it out though, the city that never sleeps, is just another name for the city that never stops dreaming.
Alicia Keys had something going when she sang, these streets will make you feel brand new these lights will inspire you, let's hear it for New York.
