Chapter 16

D̆̈ă̈n̆̈ĭ̈  P̆̈Ŏ̈V̆̈
I woke up at 5:55 as I always do. At this point my body is just used to it. I tried to figure out how to get out of Taliyah's bed without waking her. I failed. Immediately.

"Baby?" she asked groggily
"Hmm?"
"Where are you going?"
"I have to go take my meds baby. I'll be right back"

I go down the steps of her bed I pulled on some shorts and a hoodie and went down to the kitchen for some water. As I was walking back towards the stairs, the front door opened and Jalyn walked in.

"Oh it's you" she said in a disgusted tone
"Hi Jalyn" I took a deep breath but regretted it because she reeked of alcohol. She gave me a fake smile and I made my way upstairs.

When I got back in Liyah's room I got my med case out of my bag and took them with my water. I looked over at Liyah and she opened her arms to me.

I walked up the stairs to her bed and took off my shorts and hoodie before I laid my head against her chest. She wrapped her arms around me.

"Hey baby" she said rubbing my back
"Hi"
"Are you okay?"
"Yea I'm good. I saw your sister just now"
"Ugh. Wait how?" she scrunched up her face
"She had just walked in the front door."
"Oh wow that's interesting"
"Mhmm she smelled like alcohol like so bad it made me nauseous"
"Mm that's a shame"

Taliyah turned her tv on and put on some random show. She started to play in my hair. Her doing this plus how soft and warm her skin was and her heartbeat made me fall asleep again.

When I woke up again I looked at Taliyah who was already awake. She was on her phone but still had one hand tangled in my hair.

"Hey baby" she smiled when she saw I was awake. She put her phone down and lifted my head in her hands. She leaned down and kissed my lips a couple times.

"You ready to get up?" She asked me
I shook my head no and she laughed before laying me back down. We laid for another thirty minutes.

I sighed and turned onto my back.
"You ready to get up now?"
"Mhmm"

She stood and held my hand as she led me into the bathroom with her. She took a couple pictures of us together before we started getting ready for the day.

Taliyah stole another one of my hoodies and slipped some shorts on. I pulled a tshirt and some sweatpants on. I was helping Taliyah clean up a bit when there was a knock on her door.

"Come in" Liyah called
"Hey babies I'm bout to start cooking did y'all want something in particular or?" Her mom asked peeking her head in room
"Hey ma. Dani doesn't eat red meat or eggs so" Taliyah told her
"Okay baby. I'll call y'all when breakfast is ready"

"Wait so your mom knows your sexually active" i asked her
"Yea"
"So she knows we had sex?"
"Yea"
"Interesting" i said

"What? Doesn't your mom know you're sexually active?" she asked me
"Yes but like it's weird when someone else's mom knows"
"Yea I guess. At least she likes you" she shrugged
"What you mean?"

"This other girl I used to mess with- my mom could not stand her"
"Great" I said
"You'll be fine" she laughed

About 45 minutes later her mom called us for breakfast. Taliyah's whole family was at the table-including Jalyn.
This won't be that bad right? My intuition says otherwise.

I sat next to Taliyah and we held hands as her mom led a prayer. After everyone said "amen" we started making our plates.

I made my plate of pancakes, turkey bacon, homemade hashbrowns, and some fruit.

"Baby I know you can eat more than that" Taliyah said
"Yea I don't wanna eat all y'all's food"
"Girl you're good it's just gonna be a lot of leftovers if you don't." She said putting more on my plate.

"Do you wanna try some grits and biscuits?"
"Yes"

I sat down again and started eating.
"Mmm. Es tan bueno" I said with my mouth full.

"What wrong baby?" Ms. Tia asked
"Oh, solo decía- shoot. Forgot how to speak English. I was just saying how good your cooking is"
"Awe thank you suga" her mom smiled

We kept eating and Jalyn was glaring at me the whole time. Taliyah had noticed and was starting to get agitated. I was trying to ignore it but Taliyah wasn't having it.

"Is there an issue Jalyn?" she asked

Oh shit

"Nothing Liyah just noticed how your 'friend' likes to eat."
"Okay. And what about it?" Liyah asked

"Girls can we please not do this at the table" their mom interjected
"Sorry ma" liyah said
We kept eating in silence and Taliyah fed Nani.

I helped Ms. Tia clean up while Liyah helped the kids clean themselves up.
Jalyn stood by the entrance to the kitchen on her phone not helping the whole time.

As Taliyah and I were walking past her I felt my stomach drop
"Fucking dykes" Jalyn muttered under her breath

Taliyah turned and swung so fast I barley understood what was happening. Ms. Tia was yelling trying to break them up but Nani started crying so she went to try and soothe her. I managed to wrap my arms around liyah's waist and pull her off of Jalyn.

"Let me go Dani" Taliyah yelled at me
"No baby" i said quietly in her ear knowing that yelling would make things worse
"Dani I'm not fucking playing I'm sick of her fucking mouth" she yelled some more
Jalyn had crawled into a corner and was holding her head as she cried

"I know you are baby but she's not worth your energy. You can't let her get under your skin"
"But-"
"I know baby. You can't lower yourself to her level. If she hit you first- then it's fair game. But she can run her mouth all she wants"
"Okay"

I kissed her and made direct eye contact with Jalyn as I pulled away. I led Liyah upstairs.

"Did she get you?" i asked
"No she ain't get one fuckin graze on me." She yelled
"I'm fucking hot" she said taking my hoodie off.

"Come on let's lay down" Liyah laid on my chest and we watched tv until we fell asleep.

I woke up to a knock on the door.
"Come in" I called
"Hey suga. I am so sorry about Jalyn. I just don't know where I went wrong with that child"
"It's okay mama tia. It's not your fault. Some people just get so deeply tangled with negativity there's no way to help them" i told her.
"I know baby. I just wish she turned out better than this. I'm sorry again suga" she said wiping her eyes.
