~Genevieve Arellano

The clock strikes 10, I slowly climb out of bed and tip toe my way to my balcony door. I place my hand on the door handle and push it down, the door makes a high pitched sound and I cringe. I notice all the lights are off and quietly close the door behind me. I grab the key on my necklace and lock the door.

The breeze instantly hits me, sending a shiver down my spine. I walk over to the edge and peer over the side, my heart tightens as I examine the drop. This is a bad idea. My subconscious tells me and I mentally slap her. I take a few deep breaths before grabbing the vine and pulling on it to make sure it's secure enough. You're going to fall you idiot, you're not athletic. I know I'm not, shut up.

I stop for a second and laugh at the fact that I'm arguing with myself. I mean, when you don't have any friends you might as well talk to yourself, am I right?

I focus back on to what I am about do. I hold onto the vine tightly and kick my legs over the barrier. I feel my heart rate increase. I tighten my grip on the vine and slowly climb down it. One step at a time Gen, one step at a time.

I get to about two meters off the floor and drop, thankfully I land safely. I brush off any leaves and twigs that cover my hair and clothes before walking down the pathway. Haha, I knew I could do it. No you didn't. I roll my eyes and continue on with my journey.  Flowers brush against my bare thighs, I am only wearing shorts and a baggy shirt. I probably should have worn something warmer considering it's night time but I am too happy to care. I smile and breath in the fresh air. Something I have been longing to do for years now.

The speed of the wind starts to pick up, it blows my hair in every direction frantically. I flip my hair in front of me and take the bobble off my wrist, tying my hair into a bun. I continue walking through the grass and onto the muddy path. I examine my surroundings, the trees are tall and scary, they are all shaped differently and have big long branches coming out them. They peer over me and get closer together the further I go. One branch almost hits my face but I duck my head round it and sigh.

I am so lost in my daydream that I almost don't hear the rustling in the bushes. I gasp and cover my mouth with my hands, my heart rate increases again, sending a sharp pain to my stomach. I see a dark figure approaching me and I start running the opposite way. I am so focused on getting away from this stranger that I don't notice a log right in front of me and of course I trip over it. What is this? Some kind of horror movie?

"Fuck." I whisper, biting the inside of my cheek to keep myself from crying. I sit up properly and examine my knees, blood slowly oozes out of the minor wounds.

"Humans like you, shouldn't be wondering the streets on their own at this hour." A low, husky voice says.

I look up, to see whose voice it belongs to, I can't see much but I can make out the outline of a tall man. He is wearing all black and his hair is chocolate brown and curly. Even though it's dark outside you could see his bright emerald green eyes from a mile away, they are breathtaking.

"Who are you?" I sob.

He kneels down in front of me and gives me a better view of his features, he is very handsome. He lifts his thumb and catches the tear that begins to roll down my face.

"I don't have a tissue." He chuckles. The sound of his voice soothes me, making me trust him even though I probably shouldn't.

"I asked you a question." I want to know who this strange man is.

He puts his hand on my cheek and I cringe under his touch, but I let him keep it there. His hands are so warm even though it's so cold outside.

"You're a bit feisty aren't you? I like it." He smirks, the humour is obvious in his tone.
