~Genevieve Arellano

Do you ever feel lonely? Like everyone around you pretends that you're not there. And when you speak, nobody understands because their too caught up in their own business? And when you feel like running away and finding someone to talk to, they think you're crazy. There is nowhere to go, to escape this feeling. And in the end, it's only you and your mind, fighting together to keep you sane.

I never felt like I fit in. My father and brother have always had a special connection. My mother and I had that same bond just before she passed two years ago. Ever since then, my father has kept me isolated in these walls, it's suffocating, you know?

I have no one to talk to, my brother is always out training with my father. They can relate to one another because they are both wolves. They always ask me if I want to be turned, but I've never wanted to or felt the need to.

I stare into the distance through my window, I imagine myself walking through the fields without a care in the world, with the sun shining onto my pale skin. I would do anything to be out there instead of being locked up in my bedroom.

My father thinks I can't handle the world, that it's too dangerous for me to be out there on my own. I am seventeen years old and he is always too busy to take me anywhere. I hate that about him. He is too over protective. He doesn't trust that I can take care of myself. I have no freedom. He's an amazing man and cares for me but sometimes he cares too much.

I wish my mother was here. She always knew how to make me feel better. I felt alive when she was here, ever since she passed, I feel like my soul passed with her.

A knock at the door pulls me out of my thoughts. The door opens and I turn my head to see Cam standing there, his body leaning against the door frame and a small smile plastered on his face. I love my brother, he has a heart of gold. I just wish we communicated as much as we used to. My mothers passing affected us all, we all changed after the event.

"Come downstairs for breakfast Gen." He smiles and turns on his heels, exiting the room.

I let out a sigh that I didn't know I was keeping, and slowly make my way out of my room and down the stairs. I walk into the dining room and sit across from my brother.

We engage in small talk as we wait for my father to bring us our food. He walks in a couple minutes later and places a plate in front of Cam and I. He takes a seat next to Cam and smiles at the two of us.

"I hope you enjoy your meal." He beams.

"Thank you." Cam and I say in unison.

I look at the food he has prepared, scrambled egg with bacon and beans, it's Cams favourite food. He also made some pink lemonade and placed these squiggly straws in the glasses. I smile at the sweet gesture.

I quickly finished off my food and say thank you before excusing myself from the table.

"Genevieve." My father calls, I stop dead in my tracks and make my way back to the table.

"Yes." I answer and stand in front of him.

"I need some ingredients for dinner tonight, would you mind walking to the shop for me?" He asks and I can't help but smile.

"Of course I can." I say and try to hide my excitement. This will be the first time I leave the premises I call home, without either of them with me.

He hands me the money and a list of the things I must buy, I read over the list in my head and examine his squiggles and nod.

I run to the door and unlock it quickly before swinging it open, the wind hits my face and the sunlight shines on me. It's so bright that I squint my eyes and place my hand over them. I smile the biggest smile and shut the door behind me before skipping down the pathway. It's quite warm for April, but I'm not complaining.

I walk on the path and look all around, I watch as the birds fly in the air in big groups and I watch as people walk past. I spot a little girl and her mother walking hand in hand, I smile at them and they return the gesture.

I make sure to walk as slowly as I can, enjoying every second I have outdoors. I walk past the village and around the corner to get to the shop, I arrive at the shop and walk inside. It is packed with people so I push my way past them to get to the ingredients I need.

I place all the items in a basket and go to the till, the man at the till is wearing all black and his eyes are dark, it is quite intimidating. I catch my breath and avoid eye contact.

I place the basket on the counter and he scans all the items and puts them in a bag. I hand him the money and say thank you before rushing out of the shop.

I take my time on the way back home, enjoying the little freedom my father had given me. Once i reach the house I walk in and places the bag onto the table and make my way upstairs.

My father is on the stairs making his way down as I walk up, I smile at him and run to my room. I walk over to my bed and flop down on it.

"I wish I could go out again, even if it was for a minute."

I sit and think for a moment or so.

My eyes snap wide open and I sit up to grab a pen and paper. I sketch every detail of my house; I even draw the vines that go from the roof to the ground.

I make a plan on how to get out of my house without being caught. After finishing my drawing I fold it up and place it under my pillow. I lie down and look up at the ceiling, waiting for the hours to pass.
