That night they all met back at the lodging house. As soon as Jack saw Alyssa he grabbed her arm and pulled her up to the boys bunk room, quickly telling the other newsies not to come in after them.

"What were you thinking?!" He shouted after he closed the door. "Running off like that when you're as hurt as you are! Lyss you're gonna get killed someday. Hell, you almost did last night! I'm not gonna babysit you but you do need to listen to me when I try to watch out for you! I-I can't lose you Lyss. I can't live without you. I lo- I really care about you."

"I'm sorry, Jack," Alyssa said softly. "I care about you too. And I appreciate you looking out for me. But I promise I was careful an-"

"I don't think sprinting in the busy streets of New York is being careful, Lyss."

"You're right. I'm sorry." Alyssa looked away, tears filling her eyes. Normally she would shout at Jack about how she's old enough to take care of herself, but she had really worried Jack. And she had definitely needed him last night. She quickly brought her hand up to wipe away a stray tear.

"Lyss... is it ok if I hug you?" Alyssa nodded her head; she could really use one of Jack's hugs right now. Jack wrapped his arms tightly around Alyssa, and Alyssa quickly returned the hug, leaning into his firm chest. This was very quickly becoming Alyssa's favorite place in the whole world; just staying in Jack's arms. Soon Alyssa felt her legs giving out. All the walking and running had really gotten to her. Jack held her tighter as he moved with Alyssa down to the floor. "Are you ok?" He asked, leaning down to make eye contact with Alyssa. There were tears streaming down her cheeks, but her eyes were unreadable.

"Please don't leave me," Alyssa whispered. All that was going through her head at the moment was how all the people she had loved had left her. Her father, her mother, Liza, even Poker. And she loved Jack too much for him to leave too. Of course only as a friend. Even if she had taken a liking to him it was way too soon for love.

"Lyss, I'm never going to leave you."

"Promise?"

"Promise." The two stayed on the floor holding each other close until Jack saw that Alyssa had fallen asleep. Then he picked her up and laid her on his bunk, putting a blanket over her before going to join the other newsies in the basement.

"So, Jack. Care to explain what happened with you and Miss I Don't Do Love last night?" Race asked, grinning as Jack made his way downstairs.

"Ya your bunk isn't exactly the quietest, we all know she was in it with you," Mush added, also grinning. Jack immediately turned around to go back up the stairs, not wanting to deal with this, but Race ran and caught him before he could leave.

"Oh no, you're not getting out of this one Jackie boy," Race said, dragging Jack back downstairs.

Jack looked to see that none of the girls were down there before sighing. "She was attacked last night. I took her back here and helped her calm down. But she didn't want me to leave her so we slept in my bunk together." Race raised his eyebrows, grinning. "But we didn't do anything! We just slept."

"And cuddled," David muttered from his spot on the couch. A few of the newsies laughed. Jack knew Race and Mush would never let him hear the end of this.

"You got a problem with that, Davey?" He said angrily. "I was just trying to help her calm down so you can all shut up. And Davey, if you wanted to sleep with her you could've been the one to save her, but you weren't so sucks for you."

"You all disgust me," Ella said, coming downstairs with Lucy. Kate was helping Laura get ready for her nap. "First of all, Alyssa has a name and she's not just some object for you to 'cuddle' or sleep with. Second of all, who gives a fuck what Jack did. Alyssa was badly hurt and he saved her from getting fucking shot. So why don't you just stay out of other people's business." Lucy and Kate glared at the boys and made their way back to the girls bunk room.
