"This is so useless," David grumbled for the third time that morning. He, Race, Jack, Jewel, and Alyssa were all on their way to the theatre.

"We know," Alyssa said, rolling her eyes. She was in a bad mood because Jewel had decided that she wanted to come too, and Jack had let her. They arrived at the theatre and Alyssa went to go in first, until she felt a hand on her shoulder pulling her back.

"Wait," David said, "maybe Jack should go in because she'll be more likely to say yes to the leader." Jack went to protest but Alyssa stopped him.

"You know what, David? I think your ideas are great. Jack, why don't you go in?" She said, giving Jack a look.

"Great. Jewel, you go in, too. She'll probably listen better to a civilized person," David said, taking control. He was happy. Alyssa was agreeing with him a lot and even called him by his real name. As Jack and Jewel went in, Race pulled David aside.

"I'd be worried if I was you," he whispered.

"Why?" David asked.

"She's agreeing with you. And she called you by your real name."

"That's a good thing, Racetrack."

Race scoffed. "You can think whatever you want." The boys walked back to Alyssa.

"Let's see how things are going," Alyssa said, grinning.

"I don't think-"

"Sounds great, Allyoopa," Race said.

Alyssa laughed. "You haven't called me that in forever."

The three snuck into the theatre to watch how it went.

"I don't know, Jack," Medda said. "You're not really the kind of person I would put in charge of my theatre for a night full of a bunch of boys."

"Please, Ms. Medda? We'll be good, I promise," Jack said, not wanting to let Alyssa down.

"Ms. Larkin, I can assure you your theatre will be in perfect hands. See I wasn't raised with the rest of these hooligans. I'll make sure everything goes smoothly," Jewel said, thinking Medda would be appealed to by a high-class young woman.

"And you are?" Medda asked.

"Jewel. It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm a new newsie."

"Well, Jewel, you're not exactly the kind of person I trust, either." Alyssa tried not to laugh as David's mouth fell open. He knew Medda wouldn't say yes, but he didn't expect her to be so rude.

"I'm sorry kids," Medda said, "I don't think there's anyone I would trust with my theatre for a newsies night." David mouthed I told you so to Alyssa, but she just ignored him and stepped out into the opening. David ran to follow Alyssa and stood there in shock as Alyssa said, "Not even me, Medda?" David looked terrified as Medda turned around to face the other newsies. Race was just leaning against the wall, grinning as he knew what would be going down later.

"Avonlea, darling! Where've you been hiding? I haven't seen you in forever," Medda said, rushing to give Alyssa a hug. Alyssa grinned, hugging Medda back tightly. Both had tears in their eyes, but Alyssa quickly regained her composure as she shot David a smug look. "How've you been, I've missed you so much," Medda said, stepping back to take a look at Alyssa. "You look amazing, though I wish you'd stop parading around pretending to be a boy."

"I'm doing well, Medda. And you know what my mother wanted. I can't deny her wish for me to be safe," Alyssa responded.

"That's true. I understand, Avonlea. And you should come around more often. I know I'm not your mother and I never will be, but you feel like a daughter to me, and I worry when you're gone for too long."

"I know, Medda. These past few months I've been in Brooklyn a lot, and before that I was going from place to place, getting to know new newsies."

"Of course you were," Medda said laughing. "It's as if every newsie didn't already know your name."

"Just broadening my fan base."

"Where did you ever learn a word like 'broadening'?" Jack asked with a smirk on his face.

"Says the boy who isn't trusted by a woman who's known him closely for at least five years."

"Hey!"

"Anyways Medda, could we hold newsies night here? It'll be the end of the week and I promise I'll keep everything clean and in one piece."

"I know you will, darling. I can never say no to you," Medda said, sighing. "Fine, you can have newsies night here, on one condition."

"Thank you, Medda! I'll do anything," Alyssa said, giving Medda a hug.

"All you have to do is let me dress you up on that night," Medda whispered into Alyssa's ear, making sure no one heard. Alyssa considered this. She would definitely be teased about this for a while, but where else were they supposed to have newsies night?

"Deal," Alyssa said, pulling out of her hug.

"Yes!" Medda had been dying to play dress-up with Alyssa for forever, and now she would finally have her wish. While the idea was always very appealing to Alyssa, she always said no so that the newsies wouldn't tease her. This time there was no way around it though.

"We've got to get going, Medda. See you later!" Alyssa said.

"Come back soon!"

"What the hell was that?!" David asked when they got out of the theatre.

"Well, David, maybe you aren't as smart as you think you are," Alyssa said calmly.

"Well- Bu- How come you didn't just tell me?"

"'Cause that's not how she rolls," Race said, shooting Alyssa a grin. "You should've known after being with her for a few months now that something was up."

"Well, it's hard to know someone when they spend half their time with Spot and the other half with Jack," David grumbled. He then put his hand up to cover his mouth, realizing what he had just said.

"Oh, so that's what this is all about?! Is poor little David sad that I don't spend any time with him? Or is he implying that I'm just a little whore for Jack and Spot? Maybe, just maybe, I've been friends with Spot and Jack all of my life, so they're two of my closest friends. But, no, by all means, call me a slut, see if I care. The world doesn't revolve around you. And you're not the only one with ideas. You're fucking new here, you have no idea how any of this works or who I know. So just fuck off!" Alyssa stormed off after this, Race hot on her heels.

"She doesn't like any of us," Jack said to David quietly before running after Alyssa, too.
